Your hear all the time, QB and DE are two of the most important positions in the NFL. Is that true anymore? Here are what I'd consider the best DE's in football right now.

Myles Garrett
Mecah Parsons
TJ Watt
Aidan Hutchinson
Trey Hendrickson
Maxx Crosby
Nick Bosa
Danielle Hunter
Jared Verse
Will Anderson Jr.
Khalil Mack

If we step just a little further back to get some of the other top great DEs from recent years

Julius Peppers
JJ Watt

The top sack producers at DE in the past 10 years - Watt, Garrett, Hendrickson, Bosa, Mack, Cam Jordan, Daniel Hunter

None of these have every won a Championship

In the recent past Super Bowl winners - most pressure has come from the DT position, not premier DEs
Chiefs with Chris Jones
Eagles with Carter and Fletcher Cox
Rams with Aaron Donald
Bucs with Suh (older, but still had 12 sacks over those two years with them)

You have to go back to probably the Broncos in 2016 w/ Ware and Miller to find a premier DE winning.
I think we all agree that a disruptive DT is a game changer in today's NFL, so what about the DE position?

Now, this isn't to say getting pressure from your DEs isn't important...but can that be schemed successfully without having a top 10 player at that position?

I'm just throwing it out there for discussion.

That's a big reason why I have been saying for a while now that you don't pay $40+ million (due to salary cap) to a defensive player no matter how great they are.

You need multiple good or better defensive players, not 10 average players and one great one.

It's a good point. Great defenses are built from the middle out. The great Ravens defense. Tampa. New England. Last year with the Eagles. They are lead by great interior players. DTs and LBs. Pass rushers are great to have but championship teams are great in the middle.

NFL football is still a team sport. This is true for every position. But it is especially true for a defense. Either you play team defense or you lose. No one defensive player can make up for the 11 others. Yes, this has been Dallas's problem on defense. Micah gets triple teamed and no one wins their individual battles to make a play. But this game is still about playmakers as well. Finding the right mix of players and coaches is not easy or every team would contend for a Super Bowl every year.
