Preseason Pet Cat Thread

I think Whitehead makes it as well.

For the sake of uniqueness, let me say Geoff Swaim makes it.

(That La'el Collins kid just might stick as well)

Whitehead has been turning heads since he got here. He will draw D. Harris comparisons, but I think he will be better.

Alright Zone Faithful -- lets get this thang started.

Who is your pet cat to make the 53 man roster? You can simply post a name, or post an explanation.

GO!

Mine: Lucky Whitehead

In terms of just making the team, mine would probably be on DL. They have several guys competing for the final spot or two on DL that all seems to have good potential upside. I'm a fan of Bishop for certain. I'm also interested to see Russell, Gardner, Whaley and Coleman.

Others OL Gibson, TE Swaim.

I am a little concerned because he has mishandled a punt at least 2 times according to reports

Lol Harris was mishandling punts in the season. I'm not worried. This is why they practice.

I think he makes the team, but doesn't return punts week 1 or until later in the season. Probably someone like Beasley will get the bulk share and Dez situationally.

But I don't think Dwayne Harris returned punts early in his rookie year, I know he was cut early and added to the practice squad, but eventually got called up.

Won't really know until they show themselves in a preseason game. For now I'll go with the longshot, Jameill Showers. He can run.

The issue is that if Whitehead is not the returner, his value to the team is limited. He would be the backup to Beasley and likely never be active unless Beasley was injured.

At WR they really have a bigger need to develop bigger outside type WRs than they do to develop a backup to Beasley in the slot.

2014 Southland Conference Player of the Year and four time All American.......... Gus Johnson.

I agree, but what bigger outside guy do we have worth developing? Street is likely already a roster lock, and is not in competition with Whitehead. AJ Jenkins is a camp body and will be gone soon enough. They obviously like Farmer, but I think he has very little chance of contributing even if an outside WR goes down, and I don't really know enough about Greenberry to comment. Everyone else is under 6 feet.

Dallasdave, I like Seastrunk a lot...and this would be a far reach. He's talented although, if he can hang with pass protection.

You can have two slot guys.

Whitehead is my pet cat as well but he needs to show he can a reliable punt returner to make the team

You can have two slot guys.

That would be with 4 WRs on the field. In 3 wide, the side with the single receiver could have a tight split, but that's normally the side where the TE is aligned so that WR is technically an outside receiver.

I actually think if they wanted to do that or need a backup for Beasley, they would use Dunbar as a WR. Garrett talked about Dunbar being such a good receiver that he could move to WR if they needed him there.

Beasley is already the primary reason that Escobar does not get more snaps. If not for Beasley, they would likely use Escobar more as a 2nd receiving TE. He is reported to be lining up split out wide a lot in training camp. He might have the best hands on the team.

I like Whitehead, but if he is not the returner it's highly doubtful that he would be active. For him to make the roster without being the returner, he'll have to be a fantastic WR. As strictly a WR, if it's close between Whitehead and a big WR, the Cowboys seem to prefer keeping the big guys.

I think he will be the returner so the other issues would be a moot point. He has also been practicing as coverage guy on special teams which would really help his cause to make the team. If he is only the returner, then they might prefer to just have Beasley be the PR and use the extra spot on the 46 for an ST coverage guy. KR is really not a big deal anymore because kicks most often just result in touch-backs now anyway. PR is the primary concern to me.

Flat out running speed, skills, and vision. Now you can work with pass protection and blocking. I remember when Dallas got Tony Dorsett and they had Preston Pearson and Robert Newhouse. Dorsett in his rookie year was not a good blocker or pass receiver. They started Preston and Robert most of the season but still used Tony D on run downs and before the end of the season Tony was starting and rotated all three backs. Preston was the best receiver of all three backs, but they used the talents of all three backs and it worked.... They won the Super Bowl that year.
