Prime for Prime. who was better. Dez or Miles Austin?

When Dez and Miles Austin were playing their best football Dez was hands down better. During the seasons Dez was playing his best football he scored 41 TDs most of any receiver in the league over that span. Miles Austin on the other hand scored 18 TDs when he was playing his best football. All Austin had over Dez was speed. He was known as hands of stone, he had a number of drops during his best years. Most of Dez’s drops have come during his decline the past three seasons.

Questions like this is why I don’t listen to half the crap ppl has on this forum lol Dez was obviously better...

May 2016: Dak will take 3-4 years to develop

November 2016: Dak is the best young QB in the league and probably a top 5 QB overall

November 2017: Dallas should cut Dak

OP your question is perfectly valid and anyone who is saying otherwise is either clueless or has a short memory. I would put 2009 Miles Austin easily above any version of Dez that has ever existed. Despite only being the starter for 9 games that year, Austin piled up 81 catches and 11 TDs on over 16 yards per catch. He had an incredible 5 games that season with over 10 receptions including a 15 catch, 250 yard game... and again he was only the full time starter for 9 games. For perspective, Dez has less 10 reception games (4) in his entire career. Heck it might take 2017 Dez a month to catch 15 passes.
Dez has had a better career but that isn’t the question being asked. And it’s not really even all that better. Austin went to two Pro Bowls; Dez has gone to two Pro Bowls and a third in 2016 he had zero business being in.
2009 Miles Austin vs 2014 Dez Bryant is absolutely a good debate between two extremely hard to tackle receivers with big play ability.

I don't get why people are tripping...I'm guessing they forget how good Miles was..and he could run good routes, usually UDFA WR's have too since if they were just big and could run fast they'd would have been picked.

Well, Romo said Miles Austin was the best receiver he ever played with. If that means anything...

Also, I think people forget but Miles Austin pretty much saved our 2009 season. Sadly, his hamstrings cut his peak years short.

The OP asked who was the best in their absolute primes, not who had the best season or the best nine game stretch. Miles Austin was a flash in the pan who came out of nowhere. He caught everyone by surprise in 09. His numbers dropped way off the following season despite playing a full 16 games as the starter. After his big 09 season it was downhill from there. Dez on the other hand consistently produced for three straight seasons from 2012 to 2014. Like I mentioned he put up 41 TDs in those three seasons. He had double digit TDs in each of those seasons. Even the great Michael Irvin only had one double digit TD season.

Dez never had fewer than 1233 yards, 88 catches and 12 TDs during any of those seasons. When you’re judging who the better receiver was you have to look at consistency over a period of time. You can’t just look at one season or a 9 game stretch. Austin was a good receiver but a flash in the pan. The season he had in 09 was a fluke.

Miles had 1 great year. Dez had 3, 2012-14. So Dez had a better prime years (3), vs Austin's 1. And no, i'm not clueless or have a short memory.

Austin was faster and a better route runner. He was also more elusive and had more short area burst. He also has better hands.

Dez has better stats, but that's largely due to circumstance.
