So I've been watching reruns of "The Rockford Files" on RTV lately and it got me wondering: how many of you have ever hired a PI for personal or business-related reasons? Jim Rockford's rate back then was "$200 per day + expenses," which most of his clients balked at. I wonder what the going rate is today.

I have a friend that owns his own PI business in NYC. I could ask him if you are really curious.

For some reason, Hall and Oates come to mind....

Song was playing my head as well...

I'm sure they still exist, but for some reason the idea seems outdated.
Private Eyes that is, not Hall & Oates.

Can't hurt. I'm sure the rates differ for solo PIs vs guys who work for a security firm.

Too dangerous. Plus, I don't own a gold Firebird.
No excuses. Trade in your Miata and Prius and that gold Firebird. :D

Back in the 1960s I was the claims manager for an insurance company and I hired a lot of PIs to conduct local investigations of suspicious claims and $150/day plus expenses wasn't out of line back then.

Since then I turned honest and had to get out of the insurance business. -:p:

This was my friend's response:

That is simply too broad a question. PIs do many, many things so it depends on what you're looking to have done and it is also depends on where - as in what area/locale. It also varies from PI to PI. But give me a better idea so I can give you some kind of range.
So did you have anything specific in mind?

Two weeks ago, my limo driver was also a PI. We were talking and he was telling me about the business. He does a lot of surveillance for insurance companies and doctors. He spends a lot of time on the computer with some good databases. Seems like there are some databases out there with a lot of info. He said he spends a lot of time hooking up his video equipment to make sure he gets a good shot. He said it was a lot of boredom with a few minutes of excitement. And you can't read or surf the net because you have to constantly monitor the person to catch him playing basketball or something while claiming disability.

He said most of the PIs work for a firm on salary. Very few have their own private practice. The doctor's malpractice insurance covers PI fees.
