Maybe it is me, but I don't think Schultz is that great. $16 million a year? no way. The reason his numbers were so high last year is because Dak lost his nerve and stopped throwing downfield. If the offense has to rely on Schultz catching 7 yard passes and then running for 3 more yards, they are in trouble.
Do you realize a guy named Durham Smythe (30 rec.) averages more yards per catch than Schultz? In fact, Schultz was15th in yards per reception of all TEs with 30 or more catches with just 10.4 yds per receptions. It's not like Schultz is running downfield making big splash plays for Dallas. He is running 5 yard routes turning around and waiting for Dak to dump the ball off. I admit he has made a few longer plays, his longest in his career is just 32 yards.
My point is he does nothing special that I am sure the Cowboys could not get out of another TE they pick up in the 3rd or 4th round in the draft. The Cowboys have wasted enough money on players like Schultz. Good guy, but this is a business and the business is winning football games and championships. If I spend $16 million on a TE he better be a playmaker.
Some people might argue that his 8 TDs, 2nd in the league among TEs, is why he is worth a lot of money. It is a reasonable argument but I am still not convinced if the Cowboys had another TE he would not duplicate that performance given the Cowboys running woes last in the year last year.
