QB round 1, how would you react

Quit following the Cowboys until Jerry was committed...

Just curious on overall general fan reaction if the Cowboys were to do the unthinkable, by most fan standards, and actually draft a QB with the first pick.

1 Josh Rosen
2 Sam Darnold
3 Josh Allen
4 Lamar Jackson
5 Baker Mayfield

I'm not posting this concept with any actual personal agenda, I would rather go DL or OL, but that is not the premise of this post.

19 ... what do you do?
I would scream with joy from the highest place I could find.

Considering Dallas has drafted three QBs in the last twenty five years period? I would probably need to lie down.

If I knew I was grabbing a legit franchise QB and not another Ryan leaf, then I would be ok with that. I mean look what Dak did his rookie year. Say what you want now about him,but his first year shows you what a good QB "can" do.
Now the rest of the team can make him out to be a bum as well, but we would hope our FO and coaching staff would not let that happen. Romo had to suffer through it though so there's that....

Baker Mayfield has a lotta potential...potential to be the next Johnny Manziel.

If one of the others were available, without gutting our draft to trade up, sure. But I’d still keep my eyes open for a decent vet QB.

It’s a good question.
IMO, one of the best ways to improve your team’s drafting habits is to stay committed to drafting the best players available, especially with the premium picks found in rounds 1 and 2. Too many fans (and our FO too) look at the first two rounds of the draft with an eye for “needs only”, which often sets your team up to pass on a great football player.

For example, if we just enter a draft saying “we need help at LB”, then proceed to pass on a hall of fame quality LT just because “we don’t need one”, you are setting yourself up for failure.

This isn’t true for The whole draft- I’m mainly talking about rounds 1-2- take the best player.

I would be super bummed. Look, I get where some people are coming from on the subject but I think Dak at least deserves another season. Give the team some more pieces and let's roll!!! If Dak fails to improve this season then most definitely it is time to start looking.

If you really want to change the direction in Dallas then trade up to draft a new head coach. hehe :D

The Giants traded for Eli Manning when Kurt Warner (who later took the hapless Cardinals to the Super Bowl in 2008) was on their roster.
The Packers drafted Aaron Rogers when Brett Favre was their starter.
The Chargers traded for Philip Rivers when they had Drew Brees as their starter.

And about this one -- Miami selected Dan Marino in 83' draft when they had a Super Bowl starting QB in the previous season (1982) by the name of David Woodley.

Point is -- best player available at 19 is a QB, you take him and don't look back (in fact, if one is sliding down the down board, trade up if necessary).

Mayfield is the most overrated player in the draft. He’s a very good college QB, but I have serious doubts about him at the next level. He has size issues, arm strength is good but not great and he’s got issues that rub people the wrong way. You can get away with some of that in college, but in the NFL, he’ll be exposed.

If you want to see Baker Mayfield’s lack of running ability, watch him get form tackled by a 40 year old Oklahoma police officer and then cry like a 6 year old. Here’s a link: https://********.com/video-shows-police-tackling-okalahoma-qb-baker-mayfield-1793175422

I'd have no problem with it assuming the QB they pick is as good as if not better than Dak. Remember when Jimmy Johnson took Walsh in the first round when he already had Aikman? Then he traded Walsh for a 1st round pick. Taking a QB does not have to mean the draft is a disaster.

If they do pick a QB, they should pick a guy who has an accurate arm, not a guy who has physical features but struggles in the pocket.

Mayfield is a long shot to be a good NFL QB imo.

I think he is so overhyped.

But hey... Darnold looks overhyped too and QBs that young when they leave college just hardly ever have good careers.

Give me Rosen and Allen.

Like Jared Goff? Alex Smith?

Considering we have two young QB’s in Dak and Rush already I think bringing in a vet QB would make more sense than drafting a QB in rounds 1-5. If we did draft a QB in round 1 I would feel bad for the team.

People honestly think taking a QB with our 1st round pick this year is a smart idea?

So the pick was a wash considering the QB was taken in the first round then traded for a first round pick. How many of these QB’s will you know to come in with a NFL accurate arm within the first 3 years?

The list is short and when you're reaching for a guy like Alex Smith who is a top tier journeyman it shows what you get.

Goff? I'd wait to see more of him.

Then you have Stafford & Cam Newton.

And then it really drops off when trying to find a success story. Jameis Winston? Mike Vick?

If i'm drafting a QB I want a Senior Quarterback.

If Sam Darnold were to fall at 19 you take him. He's going 1st overall though, so it won't happen.

For the record, I am a big Dak backer and think he's the real deal.

I think it's all over the place from young to Senior if you look at the history. But your point is obviously valid.

On the other note, Alex Smith has started on different teams that traded for him. He has been a starter throughout his whole career and has made pro bowls.

Mike Vick was a terror in this league on 2 different points.

Stafford up until yesterday was the highest paid player in the league and Cam is 1 hell of a player.

As for Jameis Winston, this is my opinion but from the bit I saw from him last year he is definitely a starting QB in this league. Where that places him overall I think this year will better indicate that.

I don't like USC QB's but if I am going to take 1, it better be in the earlier years than the later. Darnold can do it all from the pocket, on the run and can run. Explosive arm, quick release and accurate on the difficult throws in the pocket and on the run. He's already 6'4" and will be only 21 this summer.

I would hope the rest of the picks turn out all to be Pro Bowl players that year.

Quarterback is about as close to the bottom as a need for this team as you can get, just above kicker, punter and long snapper...
