I certainly agree with many Cowboys fans that Dak needs to lead us to some playoff wins. But there is a major problem with the premise that QBs alone win SBs. That’s not correct. Teams win Super Bowls. Even the best QBs need help to win a SB.

Don’t believe me?
  • Look at the 2020 SB champion Buccaneers. Tom Brady was horrible in the NFC championship game that year vs GB. He threw 3 picks that allowed the pack to almost win that game. The Tampa defense bailed him out. He played very well in the SB. But without the TB defense, there is no SB win.
  • Look at last year’s champ the rams. Matt Stafford had ZERO playoff wins until he was traded to a better TEAM. Stafford was a key part of them winning, but he certainly didn’t carry them alone.
  • The year Filly won their SB their QB was Nick Foles. Anyone watching the e-girls playoff wins that season knows very well that Nick Foles did not carry that team alone on his back.
This list could go on and on. Teams win SBs. Yes, you have to have good quarterbacking to win in the playoffs. But if that were all you need why hasn’t Aaron Rodgers won more than 1 SB?

Look, Dak needs to start leading this team to some playoff wins- on that I wholeheartedly agree. But it takes a lot more than a hero at QB to win a SB.

Sad part is it has always been this way, Teams win SB in what is the ultimate team sports "Football" yet some still can't grasp this concept

I agree.

But certain QBs allows your team to have a different margin for error.

For example, if your QB is Patrick Mahomes the margin for error at other positions is much bigger than if your QB is Baker Mayfield.

Also, about Nick Foles, outside of the Divisional Round Game he was great in the playoffs, throwing for over 350 yards and 3 TDs (also had 1 receiving TD) in both the Conference Championship and Super Bowl.

QBs are the lightening rod of every fan base. Obviously you can’t win squat without at least a good QB. But I’m still amazed at the fans out there that think that all SB winners were absolutely carried by a great QB.

Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Mark Rypien, Joe Thiessman, Jim McMahon, Phil Simms, Jeff Hoestettler, Doug Williams….hardly household names anymore…all SB winning QBs of TEAMS that won SBs.

But wouldn’t you agree on two things:
1. Foles got “hot at the right time” more than he was a great QB.
2. Even Mahomes and Brady have been bailed out of big playoff games recently where they played poorly and their defense stepped up and won the game.

Another good point.

Challenge is there is only 1 Patty Mahomes.

We do need to get hot at the right time if we want to make a run though.

Ah, beat me to it.
It's a team effort. Not every game will your QB be flawless, or defense be shutdown. We've had games in the past even with Romo, where he would play well but the defense sucked and we couldn't overcome that discrepancy. And vice versa.

It's about getting hot at the right time and focus. That 2014 Packers game was winnable. But some players made silly mistakes and it cost the game.
2016 Packers game the team failed in the first half. Couldn't rally enough in the 2nd half.
etc..

So what happens when a QB has a great game like you mentioned, 350 yard and 3 TDs but the defense allows over 30 points and they lose

Even guys considered top QB as I have said many times you show me a HOF QB and I will show you HOF players who played with them. Brady is great no question about it but over the years he has played on teams with outstanding defense with the pats and TB over his career. I take nothing away from his accomplishment but it took other great players to accomplish team goals of winning.

you couldn't be more wrong.

Dak doesn't win games or superbowls. Team wins it. but Dak loses games and playoff games. Other QBs win games and Superbowls. except when its convenient to my argument, then team wins.

I hate to say it Bob, but this is old as water. It's ALWAYS BEEN this way. Most fans/media and certainly all NFL insiders know this. The problem is the select few with agendas consistently stirring the pot that tend to confuse some.

1. Yes, I agree with that. The team around him was good, but he was on fire those last two games. Everything worked it seemed.

2. Yes, I agree here too. My point here was not that they don't ever need any help, it's just that they don't need as much help.

Basically, it all boils down for me to not trusting Jerry and Stephen to build a team that can carry a less than great QB when needed in the postseason. I believe that only a legit top 6ish QB can have post season success with the current way things are ran in Dallas.

Let's put it another way, you think Brady would have as many rings if Jason Garrett was his HC.....I don't. Hell, Belichick is not only HOF HC but one of the best defensive coordinators of all time. It's why you never hear about Brady consistently putting up 300+ yards.

So what happens when a QB has a great game like you mentioned, 350 yard and 3 TDs but the defense allows over 30 points and they lose
The Eagles defense did allow over 30 points in that Super Bowl, but they didn't lose.

What happens when they lose? Then they lose. It happens.

Good post Bob and I applaud the effort to try to get good conversation back here at the Zone. But I also fear that facts and truth aren’t important to the individuals who turn every post here into an anti Dak rant. I was looking at some of the activity of these posters and nearly 100% of their posts are nothing but repeated attacks on Prescott no matter what the thread topic is. The only way to get good discussion going again is to apply some rules or give them their own happy place forum where they can obsess over him as much as they want. And yes there are other forums where there is good constructive criticism of every player including Dak without the trolling that occurs here.
