1970 - Craig Morton, 1965 1st round pick, 5th overall
1971 - Roger Staubach, 1964 10th round pick, 129th overall
1975 - Roger Staubach, 1964 10th round pick, 129th overall
1977 - Roger Staubach, 1964 10th round pick, 129th overall
1978 - Roger Staubach, 1964 10th round pick, 129th overall
1992 - Troy Aikman, 1989 1st round pick, 1st overall
1993 - Troy Aikman, 1989 1st round pick, 1st overall
1995 - Troy Aikman, 1989 1st round pick, 1st overall
And Staubach would have been the 1st overall pick

Of course QB taken in the first should be expected to be better, but being taken in the 1st is not a guarantee of success. Many 1st round QB fail miserably.
Far more fail miserably. It's not even the only consideration. Had Garoppolo been traded to the Bears instead of the 49ers, what success does he have?

Wow pick 129 was all the way into the 10th round back then.

Of course knowing Roger was going into the navy before he'd ever play for your team probably knocked him completely off of a lot of team's lists. I wonder what round he would have been in, if he was ready to play that year.

And I’m sure based on your post history this is an attempt to tell us we can’t win because Dak was a 4th rounder but it’s silly logic.
Hogwash.

First, I've repeatedly said that this year's team is a true contender, with a legitimate chance of winning a championship.

Second, I've repeatedly said that Dak is a top 10 QB. In fact, earlier today I agreed with and quoted the latest CBS rankings, that had Dak as the #9 QB.

Please stop making things up. This is NOT an anti Dak thread.

I do have a strong opinion about the lack of draft resources devoted to the QB position.

Love seeing Roger love:)

We all know Roger would have easily been drafted in the first round and, in all likelihood, #1 overall by the niners.

They took a QB at the top of the 2nd round.

Roger won the Heisman, the Maxwell, the Chic Harley and just about every other award there was his senior year.

What a draft for the boys though. One of the all time great drafts!

Yeah but there are some bums on this list. Foles, Flacco, Eli, Grossman….those teams didn’t win a SB because they had first round talent at quarterback.
How many of those teams were paying 20+% of their cap to the QB?

Flacco got his deal after the SB. Eli won his first on his rookie deal. It’s a factor when you both have a round 1 qb AND cap space to load up the Dline

I always laugh when people say. I don't want to waste the capital on a number one pic!

Yeah, so lets not try!!

You know how long it's been since I've gone into a game not worrying that, the quarterback may cost us a win?
Or
Thinking with our QB we've got a chance!
Heard.

Ok that’s fair. My apologies…..I have the same concerns as you honestly especially in between Aikman and Romo.

And you think a first overall pick means you won’t have to worry? You are always going to have to worry about the toughest position in the NFL.

Well who is counting for 20 percent of the cap? It sure as hell ain’t Dak.

1 Rodgers
1 Roethlisberger
1 Manning (Eli)
1 Flacco
2 Kaepernick

3 Foles
1 Goff
1 Mahomes
2 Garoppolo

Show me the winners from this group. Not the ones who lost. Same as losing in the playoffs. The goal is to win the Super Bowl not get there

Roger is a bit of a special case, as teams knew he had to serve his military commitment in the Navy, including a tour in Vietnam. That absolutely pushed his draft stock down, and it is known that many teams were simply not considering him for that reason, despite the Heisman. We had to wait five full years before he played for us. Of course, he is the best 10th round pick in the history of the league and was worth the wait.

Over the longterm he is. You can’t just restructure him and then sign some other behemoth deals in his place, because you’re pushing Dak’s cap hits to future years which still has the same impact longterm as not doing that does.

A lot of 1s and 2s don’t get it done either, try opening your eyes. That’s the problem with some of you, you think you just use a 1 or 2 on a QB and problem solved. It’s not that simple!
yep, and garrett worked out well too. If you ain't trying to make the team better you are doing nothing. I guess winning some games is enough.

He is not 20 percent this season and not over 20 last year. You can’t talk about something that hasn’t happened yet.
