Quantify your optimism

The Cowboys would be far more successful if it weren't for the constant sabotage of Jerry's interference.
What interference? Please state some examples of this constant sabotage. I honestly can't think of anything in the last couple of years at least.

I need to see this team in camp and a few preseason games before I can even begin to take a stab at quantifying anything about the current version of this team. I'd rather critique the other NFC east teams before I take a guess on the Cowboys and I'm not doing that either at this time.

Quantify your optimism of our team using a 1 to 10 scale (10 being best) in the following areas:

1. Team moving in the right direction. 8
2. We have a chance to win the SB this year 7
3. We are building a team to win a SB within three years 9
4. Our team progress is sustainable 8
5. Coaching. 7. It would be higher if Rid was gone.
6. Organization (front office). 9.Many people will disagree with this but I think Jerry and company are finally getting it.

1. 5 Stuck in neutral unless they can get a serious head coach.
2. 3 I just don't see this coaching staff winning a big game, plus the NFC has a lot of depth.
3. 8 I think the roster is good enough and have a huge advantage with Dak's contract.
4. 5 Stuck in neutral as this has been about a 0.5000 thing for the last 20 years.
5. 1 One of the worst coaching staff's in the league compounded by the players being accountable to Jerry Jones.
6. 1 Jerry and Co have created a culture of zero accountability. Stephen may be worse. Coaches are figureheads and that does not work in football.

I hope I am proven wrong.

NOT optimistic

Seriously though, we have some exciting young players but this season is all about Dak. If Dak can take his game to the next level, this team is going to be good. If Dak plays below average, it will be a long season.

Who is Rid?

I want the roller-coaster seasons to stop. Every other season is good. And, we can't move forward in the playoffs IF we actually make them.

1. Team moving in the right direction. 6 I like the way they are drafting for the most part
2. We have a chance to win the SB this year 1 NOPE!!!

4. Our team progress is sustainable 7
5. Coaching. 2
6. Organization (front office). 4 You cant have a quality FO when you continue to employ Garrett as your head coach.

5. Coaching "the Clapper". 2 others 7
6. Organization (Jerry). 2 Stephen 6

I prefer post season evaluation to optimism. but I confess to being mildly optimistic about the offense this year. worried about the lb's.

Very Little. I see at least three teams (Phi, Min, LAR) that I consider to be better roster wise and way better coach wise. Too much has to go right that wont for them to seriously contend.

We always win the Super Bowl in May and lose in December. Team stinks. Coaching stinks, Jerry sucks. Did I mention the Carrot Clapper stinks. Worst coach in the NFL. Has never adjusted to anything, ever! The anti-Belicheck.
Pokes12 I agree with your assessment. Last year we could not adjust to all of the large bumps in the road ie suspensions and injuries. The Eagles had maybe more adversity and were able to win the super bowl. go Cowboys

In order to play, I would have to define my optimism before quantifying it. Optimism ignores history and the signs and thinks everything will work out OK regardless. Optimism is certainly healthier than pessimism but when one is not in control of the outcome, it's nothing more than a desire or a feeling.

I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic because at this point there are too many unknowns to fuel either. The only parts of the team that I feel comfortable with are the OL and RB's and that includes the FO and coaching.

If I only knew if we could stop the run with these DT's or Lee would stay healthy or Smith would come back to form or all of our LB's could stay healthy because the depth is poor or if the QB can be accurate consistently or the WR's get separation or the TE's give him targets or the OC really use the run game more than to set up the pass or the second year DB's show up or Jones really is a CB or we have two Safeties or the offense can average 28+ or the defense make stops when they have to and close out a game or the PK return to form and these are just some of the unknowns but there are more unknowns than knowns.

So, in the absence of enough knowns to fuel optimism what is one to do? If they want to be optimistic and do not assume all want that because some love the pessimism, they soak it up like a sponge and like to squeeze it out on optimists.

Well, there's hope and a prayer, that works sometimes. It starts with what one wants at this time. If someone wants to be optimistic, there's plenty to support that beginning with two 12 win seasons out of the last 4 and if one wants to go the other, there's enough to support that as well.

So, let a long time self professed pessimist tell you what he learned. I used to think I was a clever pessimist because I was either right or pleasantly surprised and the optimist could only be happy with one outcome. So why does it matter? It matters right now, not later when the truth will be evident. If I am optimistic and I am wrong, what have I lost? Have I lost this time being optimistic and feeling positive? Do the pessimists really think "told ya so's" even matter because if they are really a fan, down deep inside they hate being right more than the optimists because optimism and pessimism are self sustaining. It takes work to reverse both.

I am not optimistic because of what I know or what I see but because that's what I choose to be. Took me many years to get to this point and I still have to fight my natural inclination for avoiding disappointment and "being wrong". I have to work at being optimistic but I learned during a time that my optimism would have no effect on a horrible and inevitable outcome................... except on me. I was the richer for it even though the result was my worst nightmare.

So, take it from a card carrying proud to be a pessimist for many years, all the while pronouncing himself a realist, find whatever you can to fight the pessimism now, fill in the unknowns with enough to fuel your optimism and if need be sell yourself and forget the real outcome and focus on now. Why miss a chance on being happier now?

Sorry for being long winded but this is a subject that to me is the essence of a forum like this. We are not just here to share and argue our ideas, we share something more than that. We are fans of the same team and with that should come support, not rebukes for optimism or calling those in a negative funks trolls because you don't like what they're writing. You don't win arguments against pessimists head on, you have to come at the side with enough positives that they begin to weaken a little and question where their pessimism is originating.

My friends, the only thing I know for sure about the NFL is that it changes every season and sun does not shine on the same dog's butt every year in the NFC. So, in the face of disappointment or surprise, why not choose surprise?

Philly last season proved that parity is such in the league that there are probably 15 teams that could win the Super Bowl this year. Dallas included. There are no elite teams anymore.

mr Verdict---- sir at this time i cannot quanitify my optimism...so many changes and moving parts...usually when there is a lot of change it takes time for things to gel if they ever gel....now i may be able to quantify my excitement a little better....it would not surprise me if we went 4-12 or 12-4..that is pretty exciting....excitement does not always translate to optimism...also i dont look at last year as 9-7 but really 8-8..our best were playing the eagles scrubs and we barely won 6-0...i dont call it a win when the other team dont care and play 2nd and 3rd stringers

***********--I so agree with the anxiety of our run defense...we got gashed up the middle in 6 games last year...for a 150 yd average against our run D...if that does not get fixed it is difficult to have optimism
