Adam, I know there has been some talk from Steven Jones of extending the contracts of Roy and Witten after the season is over. Do you have any sense of what kind of numbers we might be looking at, and how that might leave us cap-wise for next year's free agency?

I know Adam is knowledgeable and all, but how could he know the details of extensions that haven't been made yet? Unless of course, he's Stephen Jones.

I don't expect him to know details, but he does have an idea of where we are going into next year, and maybe we can guesstimate what Roy and Witten might get.

Really, my concern is how much room we might have to add free agents if we extend some of the guys we already have. Having to use cap space on keeping our own players is a problem we haven't had in a long time. :)

Well, since most contracts are backloaded/ or steadily increase after each year, I think we could extend Roy and Witt and still sign a few key FA's (Archuleta) without immediate ramifications. However it may put us in a precarious situation down the road when the newly acquired FA's and Roy and Witts contracts get into theit heavier years monetarily speaking simultaneously. IE Commanders

Salary cap is expected to rise to $100m, whenever they agree on a new CBA. I think we'll be in good shape. And based on how they went after FAs this year and how they created those contracts. The numbers will be pretty evenly split for each year.

I don't think we'll have any problems signing Witten, cuz the market has been set by all the other top TEs. Shockey, Gates, Gonzales, Heap, et al.

Roy is a different matter altogether. Donovan Darius contract would be the closest to look at. I was hoping Ed Reed's contract extension would be done, but it looks like that's not going to happen until the end of the year. And I was reading that Reed's injury this year has prolly cost him some money. So I'm not sure how his numbers would hold up.

Of course, I'm no Adam, but I don't mind speculating.

I think the better question here is what is the deadline to use this year's cap money to extend these guys? I know we can sign guys to use this years cap money but I'm not sure exactly how it works and how the deal has to be structured.

We'll likely give Witten a deal like Heap got - 6 year, 30 million with 11 million as a signing/roster bonus. If we could use our extra cap money this year for 6 million of the bonus, we would save 1 mill a year on Witten's cap charge each year.

Roy and Witten won't be free agents until 2007, so there's no hurry to get them signed. I certainly wouldn't expect it until after the CBA is extended, so that their bonuses could be prorated over a longer period. We'll have plenty of cap room next offseason, and if we do sign Roy and/or Witten to an extension, we can structure the deals to have minimal cap numbers in the first season and leave us as much room as we want.

Could we sign them to a mimimal contract, but give them crazy easy incentive bonuses to not count against the cap?

Witten gets 1 mill for every 10 catches, Roy get 1 mill for every 10 tackels ect.

Those would be LTBE incentives and would count against the cap.
