Danny White had a lot to live up to. Replacing Roger and all. Comparing him to Romo is strange for me. My feelings are pretty much the same for both. I probably expected too much out of both of them. Going to THREE straight NFC Championship games gives White the edge to me. We also share the same birth date, so there's that. I'm going to go with Wilford Daniel "Danny" White on this one.

If you're looking a team results to measure the two, you'd probably want to try to envision White on Romo's teams (offense and defense) and vice versa.

It's really a good excercise to do when comparing any players in team games...and especially football.

If individual accomplishment is your thing then Romo is your guy but if the question is which one did more for the team then the answer is Danny White. I was a huge Danny White fan and I've always thought his treatment by fans after he retired was an injustice.

I think Romo would have won as much or more if had had the all around teams that White had...especially the defenses.
I'll never understand how otherwise decent football knowledge people (or seemingly so) act like QBs play in a vacuum.
And I think Danny White was good, btw.
But he played with a ton of HOFers on both sides of the ball.
He threw nearly as many ints in his career as TDs. I realize it was harder back then, but co e on.
The devenses had Too Tall Jones, Harvey Martin, Walls, Jeffcoat....good grief.

both were throwing qb's but White when the NFL was still more run oriented. White had the wildcard of being the punter so there was always a small chance on 4th down of a play. Romo's performance suffered as pressure rose. White was steady. As noted above White took us to the conf game 3 times and was a victim of "The Catch" or he would of had a SB appearance.
In a nothing game I would take Romo. In a high pressure game-White

How does he compare to Tony Romo?

Played for better teams turned over to him when Staubach retired. White was a nearly 60 percent passes who threw almost as many interceptions as touchdowns.

In 1978, Staubach's Cowboys went to the Super Bowl, a year after winning it. In 1979, the Cowboys were 11-5 and lost in the divisional round despite Staubach being knocked out three times that season before retiring.

Despite all of the success under Landry and in the 1970s, the Cowboys weren't able to duplicate it in the 1980s. Now, some of the blame goes to the teams he played with as it does with most quarterbacks, but part of that inability to take the next step was because of White. He was in a much cozier situation than Romo.

You can look at the 1980 season as an example. The Cowboys had a better record that year than in Staubach's last year, but in five of those victories they held their opponent to 10 points or fewer and their foes scored 20 or more in less than half of the games.

Some of that can be attributed to how the game has changed, but still when you only have to score 17 points to win seven of your games, it's much easier to play QB.

Somebody asked this same exact question here this off-season.

I watched all NFL games played by both players.

People will claim that White was better than you think or something like that; however, in reality he couldn't carry Romo's jock.

If you think QBs like Romo and Farve threw INTs at inopportune times, they were nothing compared to Danny White. He made some of the dumbest decisions that I've even seen an NFL QB make.

Even to this day, I want to throw up when I see or hear Danny White.

On a positive note, he was a good punter when he was the backup QB which saved a roster spot.

Very good perspective but for me the 3 championship games are meaningless. Not for the fact that White got them there, but for the fact that Romo missed out on getting there because of our horrible coaching and front office decisions since Parcells left. Parcells may not have been the DeMarcus Ware mastermind but he did build this team from nothing with nothing. To me if he stayed another 2-3 years this team would have been to at least 2 championship games.

I thought Danny White was good but oftentimes responded poorly under pressure. I always liked Romo more than Danny when the "heat" was on. Despite all of that, it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges whenever two different teams are surrounding them. I also felt Danny, overall, had a more complete team in comparison -- definitely a better defense to keep the opposition's scores to a minimum. I'll go with Romo over White.

They were both pretty good, Romo never quite had enough Talent and Danny's teams were starting to age

Let me finish that sentence for you...

"Romo never quite had enough talent around him"

There's a reason Romo was distraught about last season. The Boys are finally adding 'Real' talent and building a complete team.. and Romo knew this. Unfortunately, his body took a beating throughout his career and failed him during his 'twilight' years. Romo is the most unappreciated QB I've seen. Casual fans regurgitate the Cowboy hating bias of the media.

They were identical to me in that they were mistakes waiting to happen in big games. I always knew we could win with Roger and Troy, I hoped we could win with White and Romo.

One thing White has over Romo is a classic playoff comback win, in a hostile environment in 1980 against the Falcons, when he won that we were all saying "Roger who" then came back down to earth quickly the next week in Philadelphia.

Hard to compare eras, was a different game back then and Danny took a lot of punishment on and off the field. Both were very good QBs, let's just leave it at that.
