Question on B Carpenter, our esteemed LB

Do you think he replaces Burnett as our 3rd down LB (and fills in for Brooking)?

I'm really curious as to what the staff actually thinks Carpenter can do to help out in our defensive packages?

I think the knock on Carp is that he isn't as physical as he should be playing inside in the 34. But maybe as a 3rd down cover LB he could do o.k.?

OR,

Do you think that Carp is basically trade bait come Draft Day? Not sure if we'd get much of anything for him though - maybe a conditional 6th or 7th rounder.

Is Carpenter a waste of a roster space, or can this guy contribute significantly to the Defense this year (now that Burnett is likely gone)?

Opinions?

I was wondering the same thing myself.

If the knock on Carpenter is that he's not physical enough, why not play him at nickel linebacker like Burnett did?

And if they don't even have the faith for that - cut him!

Don't wait for some lame 7th rounder, just cut him and admit the mistake already!

Maybe they want to draft a couple LBs and be 100% sure the guys aren't complete busts before they get rid of Bobby.

At this point, could anyone they draft possibly be more of a bust than Bobby?

By virtue of not even having a 1st round draft pick this year, my answer would be no.

My guess is they actually get two ILB's and just cut Barbie by TC. I'm sure they are just holding on to him until the draft.

Well yes they could.

Why is someone in such a hurry to cut a player? He isnt hurting anything being on the offseason roster, take him to camp if he doesnt work out then you cut him

I'm not actually, just commenting on CL's thought, but you could say he is a progress stopper for another LB who may actually develop. If at some point you come to the conclusion that he is never going to see the field beyond special teams, then absolutely get the 7th round pick, who may turn into a Ratliff.

I don't know, Wade some comments last year about not giving him a full shake in ST, maybe they do want to give him a shot to replace Burnett. But he doesn't strike me nearly as fast or athletic as Kevin.

How many years does he get to take up space while linebackers shuffle in and out of Dallas?

All the while, Carpenter sits on the bench.

If the coaching staff has such little faith in him, he should be cut - plain and simple.

Sign a guy off the street (like they recently did) and move on.

Sometimes, a team, just needs to admit its' mistake on a player and move on.

I think we will definitely draft at least 1 ILB and 1 OLB this year.

We know that the following guys will be on the team,

1 Ware
2 B James
3 Brooking
4 Spencer

And quite possibly,

5 Ellis (assuming we don't trade him or cut him to save cap space)

We draft 2 LBs at the minimum. And that's likely 6 & 7.

We've got Carp then battling out with Matt Stewart and a couple of other guys on our roster for the last spot.

I don't think Carp makes it this year, assuming we DO draft 2 more LBs this year (which I think we do).

There are no progress stoppers in the offseason. As for trading him I am all for it my comment was based on the "cut him now!!" responses

I was never high on Carpenter or Burnett so blah to both lol

There isn't a single player on the Cowboys that I hate more than Barbie.

He isnt on the bench he is at home on his couch

No need to cut him now

During training camp I agree cut him if he isnt showing anything or trade him

This is the thing,

Exactly how long after Brooking was cut did it take Wade to sign him? Let's see . . . . about 5 minutes.

It just doesn't exude much confidence in Carp.

The staff seems reluctent to play him. They don't appear to have the confidence to use him.

Maybe I am seeing this all wrong? But that's my impression.

Carpenter has been here and seen injuries at his position and been through two coaching staffs on defense and all he has in common in lots of inactives and special teams assignments.

So until proven otherwise I think is KP: kan't play.

but I had high hopes for him at one point and would love to be proven wrong now.

Same here. Maybe he will eventually do better in a 4-3 somewhere, because its obvious Wade doesn't like him in his 3-4.

Unfortunately, that's my impression as well (he can't play in the 34, at least).

It's just discouraging that with a player with his pedigree that he can't he get on the field in any sort of defensive package. And it's been several years now.

Yhea, you can definitely get vibes that Wade doesn't really like him as a player. And it's unusal to get those vibes from Wade. :laugh2:

I'm not in a hurry to cut him.

In fact, I'd like to see him get a chance to actually play.

As I said earlier, I think he might be a good fit to take over form Burnett on the nickel defense.

Maybe he's better going backward rather than forward (the opposite of Brady James)?

But if the team has no plans to play him, I think it would be better for all parties to move on rather than prolonging a waste of time.
