The Cowboys did wrong and were called on it........it wasn't major and the solution wasn't major....... DAL saved 10m in cap space with the Austin shenanigans and they paid back 10m in cap space......Cowboy fans have cried and whined about for over 5 years.....everyone comes up with a million excuses and technicalities but it doesn't change anything......they did it and got caught....THE END
Mara said the Cowboys broke the "spirit" of the rule, but that is ridiculous. When have you seen a professional team penalized for a nonexistent rule? Could you point to another situation like this? It was unprecedented.
Collusion means that employers get together to "fix" salaries (for example setting a cap on salaries). The only way to get around this is with a CBA. During the uncapped year, there was no CBA meaning the NFL owners couldn't get together to "fix" salaries or establish a cap, but that is exactly what some owners did. What the owners did was illegal.
What you fail to understand is that the NFL had no business telling owners not to front load contracts. There was no rule anywhere that prohibited front loaded contracts. So when you say the cowboys did something wrong, it was not wrong in accordance with US law, or a CBA, or NFL rules. It was wrong just because Mara and other owners said so.
Spirit of the rule? Give me a break.
