I'm sure I'll get roasted for this, but it is a serious question about a rumor. That's why I'm asking. Buddy of mine gets sports talk out of Dallas and said some guy named David Smoat (sp) has a Sunday evening talk show and the Sunday night after the draft, yes after the draft, claims the Roy Williams WR to Dallas is by no means dead and he believes Dallas/Detroit are still working on something. To my question. Has anyone heard this, heard of this Smoat guy or have any info to the contrary or the same. Thanks for any responses. Flame on for me keeping up the RW to Dallas stuff.

I could see us trading a player and 1st round pick next year (which would explain Jerry's eagerness for 2009 picks) ...... but its probably just rumors.

hos is keeping the dream alive.

i'd give up our 1st next year with the lower 3rd and 4th to start and keep dangling till the bite. toss in a bobby carpenter and see where we fall.

i'm next to hos keeping this dream alive!

Actually Lion GM Millen said something in response to some Detroit writer's question which indicated there possibility RWilliams could be traded. But it was something along the lines of his claiming they didn't get a "r e a l" offer. But understand the Detroit media is all over Millen for not trading RWilliams and getting the draft picks necessary to aid in rebuilding Lions team -- scenero of possible trade to Dallas was mentioned. That's probably what your guy (Smoat?) basing his comments on.

I'd give up next year's first and second, if they'd settle for it.

My guess is that if the deal were going to get done it would have done before this draft. Never know though, Millen isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I'm sure that's David Smoak out of Tyler. He is an OUTSTANDING sports guy and well respected among other writers...

He has a forum full of info HERE...

Smoaky doesn't delve into outrageous rumor and soundly researches his work...

I'd do next year's 1st, 3rd, and 4th but that's it. Isn't the guy a FA next year? Didn't the Lions lose some leverage after the draft? I doubt any other team would pony up two 1sts or a 1st and 2nd.

WAY too much! A first is stretching it...personally I don't think its ever worth it to trade a first rounder away (especially a year out), I could see it being ok in this situation but would be leery. A 1 and 2 would be too much though.

Considering the shaky job status of both Millen and Marinelli, I can't see a scenario where they would give up one of their best players.

Think of it this way, when coaches or GM's are on the hot seat, they reach, gamble, and do whatever it takes to make their teams better now, not in the future.

Look at what Savage and Crennel did in Cleveland last year, they went for broke in the draft and in free agency. They knew they had to win now or get fired and they managed the team that way. And it paid off for both men and for the Browns.

Look at the Jets this season, they're spending money like they're printing it.

Why?

Because the coach and GM are in a win now mode. And if they get fired, who cares what shape the team is in draft-wise or salary-cap wise.

John Fox and Co are doing the same in Carolina. They've spent in free agency, and they traded a 2009 #1 for a pick this year. They overpaid considerably in fact.

Why? Because they have to win now or get fired. They're thinking about today, not next year.

I think Millen and Co are in that same boat, so I don't envision them doing what might be right for the team long-term, but more of what might help them save their jobs today.

If Detroit considers using the picks to maneuver for a WR to replace Roy, then it actually makes sense for them to wait for next year's draft, just as it made sense for us to wait till next year's draft to focus on the WR position.

They couldn't have replaced him with a decent WR this year with our #1.

I'm guessing they may want our #1 next year, along with another pick for maneuvering, and possibly a starting quality DL or OL man.

no way is a 1st stretching it for a proven commidity. as much as we love our draft this year, nothing is set in stone other than we only have hope for them now.

we know what roy can do and face it, if we play as good as we hope (there's that word again) it shouldn't be more than a very low 1st to begin with. that simply makes the question, would you draft roy williams in the 1st round if you had pick 30?

i can't think of a team who'd balk at that.

I have to believe a deal is less likely today than it was a week ago.

If Dallas is giving up draft picks then Detroit gets no on the field benefit this year which is what Rod & Millen need to hold onto their jobs.

I'd even go Lawrence Welk to get him

(not my joke, but i liked it so i stole it)

I suspect one reason they might be willing to move him is because they already have Johnson, MacDonald & Furrey and feel pretty well set.

I question whether they'd spend another #1 to replace Williams, but rather use it elsewhere.

but making that trade can be parlayed into forward thinking and doing what's right for the team. is roy worth a 1st and 3rd round pick for ONE year?

doubt it.

can you afford to franchise him and upset your other WR you've committed to? not really.

if they come to the table with room to move next year they may get more of teh same. hell, didn't we trade for one of their pics next year? wouldn't that be funny to just give it back to them w/a 1?

Next year's first and second are worth the same as this year's second and third. You wouldn't give up Martellus Bennett and a third-round pick for Roy Williams? We will have a ton of picks in Rounds 3-7, so we'd still have the ammunition to trade up into the second round if we want someone there.

As far has his contract, the Lions are almost certainly going to franchise him next year, so you'd still be in the same situation if you wanted to get him.

I can second this. If David Smoak was indeed the guy he heard talking about it, then you can rest assured that there are atleast SOME legs to the idea....

I would give a 1st and a 3rd. Nothing more.

Soon they wont get anything.

I think we have some leverage here.
