Question/Rumor

They were going to release him any way and were looking at an original 6th from Jerry and nothing else. Ye,s they did laugh all the way to the draft. The loss on a 6th overall pick was a foregone conclusion. The fact that they salvaged a 4th and an additional sixth was icing on the cake.

Jerry should have stood firm on the 6th and forced them to release him. In the end Titans ended up with two draft picks for a player that was never going to suit up for them again anyway.

And what are the Cowboys paying him? By trading for him he doesnt hit the open market where the Cowboys may have signed him but not with the cap friendly deal they now have in place. Not to mention, while they did give a fourth round pick, but with stipulations- the return of a fourth in 09 if he is not reinstated.

Roy is an unrestricted FA, if Detroit franchises him it will cost us two 1st rounders.

That is too step for my blood, I pass.

Some have proposed a 1st and a 2nd next year which is the equivalent of 1st in 2009 and a 1st in 2010.

I think it is too much for a guy who we will end up paying full-market value for and will have lost the "cheap" years after he is drafted.

If we can work out some sort of a sign-and-trade with them getting TNew and us getting Roy + 2nd or 3rd rounder that wouldn't be a bad deal. Pro Bowl CBs are more valuable than Pro Bowl WRs. Given the age difference, maybe a straight swap would be more palatable for Detroit.

Jerry has got to learn to avoid being over-desperate. Lions are probably convinced he'll cave and give up a Herschel Walker type package.

Sometimes I wonder if Nors isnt just the most well-conceived troll of all-time
He just doesn't understand much about football if it's not his idea.

I'm sure I'll get roasted for this, but it is a serious question about a rumor. That's why I'm asking. Buddy of mine gets sports talk out of Dallas and said some guy named David Smoat (sp) has a Sunday evening talk show and the Sunday night after the draft, yes after the draft, claims the Roy Williams WR to Dallas is by no means dead and he believes Dallas/Detroit are still working on something. To my question. Has anyone heard this, heard of this Smoat guy or have any info to the contrary or the same. Thanks for any responses. Flame on for me keeping up the RW to Dallas stuff.

Can't get mad at someone for bringing good, credible info. I would be tickled with giving up a first and third for him. The odds are that we pick in the 20's, even late 20's, again. Who else could step in and start and do what he can at that pick. RW still has alot of good years left.

I'd do it all day long.

Good post TTown.......thanks for getting our hopes up again! LOL

Why would Detroit take those picks for next yr and not want them this year? It doesn't make sense to me. Future picks are worth less and on draft day a players value is low. That would have been the time to do a deal...

Okay, I hate these ifs and buts, but ill bite with a thought.

What if we give Detroit a one and a two or a one and a three as well as one of Crayton, Hurd or Austin and maybe a defensive player. It is a touch steep but if we realize that Roy Williams would fill the one and only void in the entire roster, that makes it worth it.

Just a thought to add the WR to replace some of Williams production opposite CJ.

Sure. Let's accelerate all of Crayton's signing bonus.

Lions have plenty of WRs which is why it makes sense for them to move Williams who probably doesn't even want to play there after next year. Their receivers are better than ours outside of TO. Crayton is not tradeable due to cap implications.

If the Lions continue to sense desperation from us they will pull a Herschel Walker on JJ who is just chomping at the bit for a veteran WR who he believes is the last piece of the puzzle for a SB run. I think that run will be short-run if there is a salary cap which is why I don't want to pursue such deals which will be a quick fix that will leave us in deep cap trouble.

We are already in a relatively weak cap position for the long run with all the Pro Bowlers who are coming up for second contracts in the next little while without going out and giving away our draft picks which should be our lifeline to cheap talent to replace departing stars that we can no longer afford.

Some will say JJ and Stephen have always found a way to get it done in the past. But how long has it been since we have had a talented roster? Through most of the salary cap era we have had a dearth of Pro Bowl quality players - that's why we could always do it in the past. Look an Indy - they just let players outside of their core go every year. They keep their draft picks and comp picks and always work the streets to bring in udfas. Patriots go about business in a similar way but often seem to be able to trade vets to acquire picks and have done a great job bringing in seasoned vets to play key roles at low salaries. We can't just keep opening the pocketbook for everyone - decisions of who to keep and who to let go will have to be made.

When there is no salary cap it will be a different world. New contract negotiations may be contentious - maybe there will be a strike or a lockout. Maybe a season will be cancelled altogether. Things could be fundamentally different and not necessarily in a good way for us as the majority of owners in the league don't have deep pockets and expect to earn a reasonable profit on their franchises.

Hey, to each his own. None of us understood your disgusting infatuation with a #4 CB but that didn't slow you down one bit.

You wouldn't...

But for the record, your "#3 wr" has started 51 of the 55 games he's played in... he's averaged over 70 catches for every 16 games played, and over 1060 yards receiving...

That's pretty damned good production from somebody who's supposedly a "#3wr"... especially playing for a team that has had shaky quarterbacking these past few years...

Perhaps they wanted players, not picks?

I don't think we know.

The problem here is that we are dealing with the most inept front office in modern NFL history...

They may likely basically give away a top prospect and then franchise a ham sammich...

As long as they think we have a perceived value for Williams, they will ask for the moon. We need to turn our backs and walk away and THEN they will call... like they did on draft day. Jerry is playing this right, and I still think this trade happens...

Give them a #2 and a pastrami on rye... toasted...

I could definitely live with a 2nd in 2009 plus give them one of our backups who can start for them (Burnett, Carpenter, Curtis, Marten).

Imagine a #3 as our #2 when he is really a #1 :D

WR Roy Williams will be a free agent next year. I wouldn't even give Det a first or 2nd rd pick for him this year. Forget it. The Cowboys can win without Williams at WR.

Philly has Two #1's and might get more Draft Picks from the Jaguars for Lito Sheppard. Givin there History I don't think Philly would do it, but with all those Extra picks you can't rule it out especially if they get a #2 from Jacksonville.

Looks like the Eagles may have three #1's now.

Straight from Clayton:

Jags up offer: Reports the Jaguars were considering offering a 2009 No. 1 draft choice in a Lito Sheppard trade offers some hope something could get done with the Eagles.
Three teams were talking to the Eagles about Sheppard, but the Jaguars now seem to be the leading team as far as interest. The Eagles wanted a first-round pick in the 2008 draft, but that didn't work out. The next option is getting a top choice in 2009.

Can you imagine what they could do with three #1's?

Knowing Andy Reid they would trade down and get at least 4 2nd round picks for them. :)

Phily has also been a team that has got value by trading vets for valuable draft picks.

We should be considering a strategy to get picks for TNew if he is too expensive and the CBs we drafted work out. If Sheppard nets a 1st, maybe Tnew can net us a 1st and a 2nd after we franchise him. All this is predicated on having Jenkins, Pacman and Scandrick/Ball step up. I really dont't think it is worth it to invest in stutdown CBs anymore given their asking price. Better just to have good ones that are found in the draft and invest money elsewhere in the roster.
