Not that it matters now, but perhaps we should push aside all the conflicting emotions and see Carter for what he is: A pretty solid backup QB. He didn't light it up with the Jets, but he still went 2-1 with a 98.3 QB rating. He's nowhere near as bad as some here claim but at the same time, I don't see him as a guy to lead a team all the way. But there's no shame in building a career as a backup. Who knows, he may even grow into a #1 one day, a la Steve Deberg, Rich Gannon and Steve Beuerlein, guys who were all backups for significant stretches but eventually found their way into the starting lineup and played well.

I guess I can't understand the strong passions this guy stirs up in people. I can understand the debates raging about Parcells, Roy Williams and Greg Ellis, but for me, Carter belongs with the Lockharts, Jesse Solomons, George Teagues and Kavika Pittmans- guys who didn't exactly light it up here or were stop-gaps on the way to greater things. I, for one, would be happy to see Carter do well.

A fair and good take.

He's 2-1 and if not for horrific coaching late in half up 14-0 and last second mismanagement in one game he's 3-0.

I'll leave it at this. JJ said this was "an easy decision". Parcell was "I'm sad, I invested 18 months in the kid".

What, why? Doesn't matter. I steadfast believe we are better than a 4-7 team with QC operating. I'll get rediculed for that opinion - who cares.

backup? BACKUP? THAT'S ALL YOU GIVE HIM!? You need to give more respect to my boy. Who saw that 69 yard touchdown pass, anyone? The fact that my boy isn't still here goes against every aspect of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and even Emancipation Proclamation!

I have to agree with jem. I think Carter is a very solid #2. An average starter for stretches. Far from a superstar. I would have liked to have had Carter as a #2.

Since I am one of those Labeled Carter "Haters", I have said several times, thats what Carter would be good at. A good Backup qb. Never a good Starting QB. And I think there were several labelled Carter "Haters" i know of who feel the same way.

I think all vitriol that Carter mostly got was due to his L and As as Randy Galloway terms, i.e. Lovers and apologists. So its not Carter stirring up passion but his supporters or fans more like, IMO.

I was done with Quincy after this candid, yet disturbing pic of him at last training camp...

It's funny that we are not even closer to finding a QB of the future today. 3 years were wasted with QC. Now we have an ancient QB, a guy that looks like he didn't play college football waiting in the wings. Go figure.....

For those who think he can never be a good starting QB, keep in mind...

1) Parcells himself said that all he needs to do to become a "good QB" is to limit the impulse plays. That comes with being more comfortable in a system, which leads me to....

2) Carter has still never had 2 straight years in the same system. Every year, he's learning and getting acclimated to a brand new system.

3) He never had a good supporting cast with the Cowboys. While he was here, our O-line couldn't pass-block for sh**. And I'll be dammed if we ever had a solid running game.

4) Quincy has the talent and MOST IMPORTANTLY...the work ethic to succeed in the NFL. A bunch of Cowboys players said he was the first to come in, and the last to leave.

I think it sucks that Quincy didn't work out here because he was one of my favorite players, but all things considered, I still have confidence that he can become a good STARTING QB in this league.

I doubt if it was only Q's play that made him so hated amongst Cowboy fans.

The same excuses always heard for Carter. I also wish he had worked out, but in three years he didn't show much development or upside to me. Are we ever going to be rid of this guy? This isn't Joe Montana we are discussing. I think if was ever going to be a GOOD starting QB, he would have started to show those traits by now.

I doubt if it was only Q's play that made him so hated amongst Cowboy fans.

And someone always has to pull this out. For many people, it WAS his poor play that left people disappointed. Nothing else. If all else fails, fall back on this tired argument.

Then what was it exactly?

He had a penchant for failing drug tests (although this was unbeknownst to us until after he was released). TWO strikes and your out (of Dallas). You can't have your starting QB 1 piss test away from a mandatory suspension - he let down the team.

I have family there! Wherabouts? Poughkepsie? North?

Why is Carter still starting in the NFL today? all drug accusations? No 4 game suspensions? Your argument will be won by NFLPA against Cowboys - they *** Up............

Dallas never had any players in the past in early programs? We had a few who were flat out were suspended too! Irvin?

Dallas never said it was drugs... merely speculation on our part...

Irvin was never in a program for drug abuse... he just supplied goods to his biotches...
