Often I like lesser characters of TV Shows or movies who have weird quirks than I do the stars of the TV shows or movies. For example, the movie Mannequin is a bad movie. However, because of the gay character, Hollywood, I found myself thoroughly entertained when I saw it in the theater. The plot was awful. His scenes were a crack up.

Another example would be Bob Newhart on TV. His character was always fairly normal. It was the oddballs around him who made the shows entertaining.

I was wondering who were your favorite quirky characters in TV and movies?

A few of mine.

Penelope Garcia on "Criminal Minds"
Klinger on M*A*S*H
Niles Crane on "Frasier"

Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean"
Milton Waddams in "Office Space"
Doc Holiday in "Tombstone"

I don't know if he's 'lesser', though Gleason was the big name, but Art Carney was great as Ed Norton.

Woody on Cheers.
Bentley from The Jeffersons.
Rerun from What's Happenin'.

The father in law on King of Queens..
Same turkey on Seinfeld..

Niles was great but so was the father

Dan Fielding on "Night Court" while he was still a lecher.

I'm Larry, this is my brother Daryl and this is my other brother Daryl.

Cartoons:
  • Quagmire - Family Guy
  • Cartman - South Park

I don't watch a lot of TV shows. From the 80s, maybe Rosco P Coltrane from the Duke's of Hazzard.

Just about all the side characters on My Name is Earl.

Colonel Klink on Hogan's Heros.

Larabie on Get Smart.

Val Kilmer as Doc in Tombstone. He stole the show as far as I'm concerned.

Festus...and family on Gunsmoke.
Murdoch - A Team
Paulie Walnuts - The sopranos (the pine barren episode still cracks me up)
Lloyd - Breakout Kings
Fez - That 70's Show

Ignatowski - Taxi
Benson - Soap
Col. Flagg - Mash
Ernest T. Bass - Andy In Mayberry
Arnold - Happy Days

Couple of my favorites.

I just finished rewatching the whole series.

Chris: Are those tic-tacs?
Paulie: I forgot I had them

Good call on Flagg.

I also liked when Henry was still in charge of Mash and they brought in Harry Morgan to play a crazy general...only later to bring him back as Sherman Potter.

Ducky - NCIS
Bubbles - The Wire
Chris Stevens or Ed Chigliak - Northern Exposure (although you could say the same for almost every character on that show.)

Yep, General Steel. I remember that episode. At the very end, Morgan asks one of the Black Pilots to do a song and dance bit. Everybodies looking at each other and finally he does the bit himself. Mississippi Mud I think.

One of the movies I love, even today, is Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter.

Bruce Dern as Joe Danby is great.

Jack Elam as Jug May (I think he was funny in both pictures) is also one of my favorites.
