You brought up McDaniels. He has been a coordinator and has experience. He has been compared to Tomlin. Also, another coach who had more experience and was a coordinator.
Being a head coach of a team is a little different than being the secondary coach where you have at most 5-7 players reporting to you.
Outside of Andy Reid, I cannot think of many successful coaches who have never been at least an offensive or defensive coordinator or ran a special teams unit.
