I think it's Randle vs. Kendial Lawrence for No. 4.
Seriously. .. Or there may not be a 4th RB.
Jonathan Bales, contributor dallascowboys.com & dallascowboystimes.com, sez speed and weight are the key statistical factors for success the last decade or more.
Randle ran 4.63 at combine and is 204 pounds light. Both, Bales says taken together, project very slim hopes for him, just running the simple stat numbers. (I think Randle ran in the mid 4.5's at his pro day though.) ... Neither a speed nor a power back.
Randle has great moves and lateral quickness to my eye. Not a great burst to the line which even Kendial Lawrence has. ... I ask you though, against NFL first teamers during the regular season - what good is Randle's shiftiness, lateral quickness, spin moves, instinct? ... This isn't 1965 and Gale Sayers is running the ball (although he would have made it nowadays ..). .... No time to be shifty but a step slow in the NFL now.
Can Randle play special teams the next few weeks doing anything, running down and tackling someone like Tanner can do, or running back kicks like Dunbar can do. If Randle can tackle someone, he might make the team.
Don't want to be a hater, hope Randle succeeds. But all teams whiff on fifth rounders before for sure and will do it again.
Sorry, I meant - speed and size "at RB" are predictors for success at that spot. Randle a lean guy without much power.
Cowboys picked Randle because:
a) Very productive runner.
b) Good pass protector, blitz pickup etc.
c) Good receiver (hands anyway, but no speed)
d) Very competitive, great character etc.
Ciskowski and co. added up all the checkpoints on their dance card, and Randle looked like a real good all-round back.
The main question, can he run the ball in the NFL? Probably not.
This is what hacks me off about the Cowboys' drafting - you find guys that do everything pretty dang good and maybe are the "right kind of guy", but don't do their respective position's requirements at a high enough level to get on the field. Hey Stephen, let me run the draft.
What are we going to do with Escobar? ... I swear it might as well be in the Larry Lacewell days with "pet cats" going meow meow.
