I can't put too much stock into the first preseason game, but it isn't looking great for Vaughan. I just feel like he needs to cut it loose and just play. I couldn't help but see an old Drew Bledsoe out there at times.

I really thought Vaughan played very well. I was more impressed with him than when I watched Jimmy Garroppollo (sp?). The only thing Jimmy G. had over Vaughan was a stronger arm. But, Vaughan did those little things that good starting QB's do like having good pocket presence and being able to throw accurately when off balance. Weeden is capable if the protection is there because he has a major league arm. However, he couldn't make those throws that Vaughan had to make off balance because the protection was bad. Vaughan also uses his height very well to find receivers and threw a really nice pass to Clutts on a flare pass for a first down. It's honestly a pass that many good starting QB's can't make (i.e. Romo, Brees, Wilson, etc) because they don't have the height and throwing motion for it. Again, doesn't seem like much, but it really is. At this point, Vaughan reminds me a bit of Romo at this stage. He needs to continued to develop his lower body to help drive passes more and I have questions about him on deeper pass patterns, but he looks good out there and is a pretty clever QB.

I like Vaughan alot, but I don't see the good pocket presence that you do. He doesn't slid away from pressure well and seems to get transfixed on things downfield and can't feel the pressure. I wan't to see more of him especially in the two minute offense. I feel like he loosens up and does a good job getting rid of the football in those scenarios.

I don't know if i'd say he is an old Bledsoe but he is definitely a statue QB. He doesn't have quick feet and it will cause him to hold the ball a little longer than he should.

With that said... If he can improve his technique and not turn the ball over I think he could develop into a solid QB.

Clearly he can pass and I think if you can protect him he can be an asset.

I have to say I was disappointed in the Cowboys run defense. They were getting moved on the line through out the evening not to mention some poor tackling. Guys have some work to do.

Not sure it was that bad. Plus, you didn't see a ton of starters out there for long stretches. They did get beat on some big runs on delayed hand offs.

It was basic and SD had 2nd and 3rd stringers out there as well. Tackling was poor. I'm not in a state of panic by no means but it was easy to see guys have a lot of work to do. I expect players to be able to tackle

We look susceptible to the draw and screen play imo.

Marinelli wants us to get upfield quick and with that mentality you can get exposed by those plays.

I'm sure we'll see a heavy dose of draws against the Giants and Eagles to keep us from teeing off.

I didn't expect Vaughn to look like a starter but I did think he needed to show improvement over last year. It's one pre season game but I felt like he has taken a step forward
Gregory we all knew would be quick but for his size he does have good power
The backup OT spot really scares me
Lucky is fast, but needs to hang on to the ball. I fell asleep in the 4th qtr but wanted to see him as a reciever. I think he can be a return guy but needs to do something as a reciever too
White looks like we did well getting him. Not s starter type but solid depth who can play safety and cb
Jack Crawford is a very inexperienced player but looks like he could contribute some this year
Did I mention the backup OT spot scares the heck out of me

Broaddus tends to agree with me on Vaughan.

"His mobility in the pocket and ability to avoid the rush on tape will be nice teaching points for Wade Wilson to go through and reinforce what they have been trying to get him to do in the development of his game."

The O-Line protection for him was pretty awful and I can see confusing that sometimes for not feeling the pressure because when a pass rusher is turned loose unexpectedly often times there's nothing the QB can do about it.

His arm strength is a bit of a concern. It's serviceable, but he needs his height and mobility to make it work because he's not going to be able to stand flat-footed and fire one in there.

I just want to see how he does with the better players on the team and see what his downfield throws are like.

One area that was really poor last night was special teams, there was nothing special about them at all. If I was in coach Bisaccia shoes I would be jumping some butt this morning

From what I saw arm strength is my number one issue with him. I see him getting picked off on sideline throws more than I like. But I like his ball placement.

EDIT: That said I used to feel that way about Romo in his first two years. I feel like Romo's arm got a lot stronger somehow.

Romo has a stronger arm than he gets credit for, I think, but generally, he uses placement and timing to compensate for a lack of overall ball speed. Vaughan has the frame to get a lot more power on his throws, but he'd have to do the same thing moving forward.

There are a number of QBs like that...Romo & Brees are probably the two best at it, but even Peyton does that from time to time.

I agree that it can be easy to be too harsh on him with bad protection. It doesn't help him that Romo is as good as gets in the NFL at sliding up and around in the pocket. I want to see him with better players around him as well.

If we can protect him at an elite level I believe he has the talent to operate the offense successfully.

New Orleans..

Evidently he didn't play well there.. Maybe it was Rob Ryans scheme.. Who knows.

So far in Dallas he has looked good in camp according to reports and he looked really good in that preseason game.

I think he played decent there. Consider it was Ryan's defense and well, just Ryan...LOL..
But mostly I don't thin Ryan thought he fit his scheme, as you mentioned, but it was also a salary cap situation, or I read that was part of the reason also.

On defense, I was impressed with 93 Gardner, 95 Edwards, & 99 Russell. Perhaps San Diego's OLine was weak. But these 3 Cowboys made a lot of pressure even when they didn't make a play. Russell name might not show up in the stat page, but he made a strong case for this roster.

On offense, I saw Collins quote something to the effect that he's learning and needs to do better. Collins looked NFL-ready right now. He wasn't pushed back pass blocking. He got a good push run blocking and stayed engaged. He switched at good times. I'm re-watching the game now and see Collins pancake block with about 5:50 remaining in the game. Nice!

Lotta takes from that game, but the easiest is that Dill doesn't even belong on a PS.

His career is in a real pickle.

On another note, anyone watch the the game preview where Escobar is standing next to 61? The guy (I think Wentzel?) makes Escobar look tiny.

We didn't need the game to see that. Have you seen the Gifs where Gregory dominated him in practice. It's the first time that I've seen a pass rusher run past and OT and literally not be touched. Gregory also dominated him with at Bull Rush in the other Gif.
