Why is it the NFL's responsibility to do whatever it takes to help them?
Because they make billions a year off of players who are damaging their brains and risking their long term health each time they step on the field. I mean it's the least they could do while they sit in their plush offices making billions a year. But they could just keep putting their players health at risk. I'm sure they will realize the mistake they are making when they see all of these young kids taking on basketball or baseball because he NFL doesn't care enough about them to even revise some of their outdated policies.

I understand that. But they should look into why guys are failing since they make it difficult to failed these tests. Instead, players can't even have contact with organizations.
They can stay with the teams through all the suspensions until the year banishment

Staying with the team didn't help RGregory with his first 5 failed tests

They are failing tests because they have no discipline....... after the 1st failed test if you stay clean for 8 weeks you are out of the program for good..... everyone says weed isn't addictive but you can't find an alternative for 8 weeks

I don't know why it's so hard for you to get the EXTREMELY simple concept that one, drinking, is legal if of legal age and the other, weed, is still ILLEGAL in most states. Besides the reasons I've already stated there is also the whole idea of perception and players being role models for young kids. Lets say the NFL did as you said and stop testing and then some players are smoking some weed in one of the states it's legal and pic gets taken of the player smoking weed and that pic goes viral on the internet. Now young kids see those players using weed and and say I got to get me some weed because (enter whatever name ) uses it. Professional sports are always worried about presenting good role models. If fans want to use, that's their business but the NFL has to test if for no other reason than the perception that they are trying to provide good role models. If you had/have a kid say 10 years old do you want them trying to sneak around trying to get weed because now the perception that the NFL doesn't care anymore if they stopped testing?

I hear what you are saying but in all fairness, if I am doing my job as a good daddy, my child will know how stupid it is to follow celebrities in the first place regardless of who they are and will know why smoking anything is WRONG regardless of what it is.

The issue to me is that society goes whoring after celebrities in music, sports, movies etc. And that is wrong. Stop worshipping people and teach your kids the same and things will be good.

Last response. Again the league isn’t beholden to what’s legal or illegal. Zeke was not convicted and the league still punished him. if a picture surfaced / went viral, they could still punish based on their in house, self governed personal misconduct policy as they see fit whether its in a legal state or not. I said the picture question was silly, not because it hasn’t happened, but because it’s silly worrying that it’s going to spark kids into smoking, and because all of the alcoholic sponsors and images permeating every game, every stadium etc. beyond that I don’t think weed is the boogeyman. For the record tho I don’t and haven’t smoked weed. I’ve always held government jobs and also it never interested me. I’m able to be objective though without a vested / biased interest.

As far as my kids, they’re going to live their lives. My wife and I are good parents and their role models. I’m not worried about how they’ll perceive athletes actions and also expect them to experiment with things as they age and decide responsibly.

AGAIN you STILL DON'T GET IT! Elliott is a poor example whereas he wasn't convicted of any crime, there were still someone that wanted criminal charges brought against him. I totally disagree with his suspension because no arrests were made or charges filed. goodell suspended on the perception that something illegal was done. By the NFL dropping the testing of weed and a player caught on a pic IN A STATE where it is legal the NFL won't be able to suspend the player under the personal conduct policy because THEY BROKE NO LAWS. The NFLPA would get that suspension thrown out in a New York minute because no law was broken where as if they do still test for weed then the NFL could still suspend that player even though he smoked it in a state where it's legal because the NFL would still consider it a banned substance.

I'm glad that you feel you don't have to worry about your kids and they have a strong parental role model but you and I both know that isn't the case for a very large percentage of teenagers. If it wasn't the case professional sports would be trying so hard to present good positive role models. I did smoke some weed when I was young but like you I got a government job and had to stop. Even after I left that job I only smoked a couple times during the past 25 - 30 years because i don't need it. Now I find it a little funny that you understand that even pencil pushers or whoever in the government can and are tested but you don't think the NFL should be testing.

I think Gregory uses marijuana for medical use not for recreation. The league doesn't care though. It's marijuana. Jerry Jones wants to get it legalized at least for the medical purposes. Gregory has to find a way to overcome his illness

I'm happy for you that you are a good strong role model for your kid but we both know that there's a very large percentage of teenagers who don't have that so we as a society have to do what we can to help dissuade kids from smoking pot or anything else which includes testing for weed in the NFL.

If the NFL has any sort of responsibility to help the players, it damn sure shouldn't be in the form of providing unlimited failed drug tests. What an insult that would be to players who don't use, and even those who are smart enough to circumvent the system. What are they getting?

You are right about 1 thing...endless amounts of failed drug tests would be, "the least they could do". As in, literally, it would be the absolutely least amount of effort and produce the least amount of impact. It would only beat out doing absolutely nothing because enabling a handful of players is better than helping no one, I suppose. I doubt there is nothing else they could do in the name of "doing more" for the players that would have less of an impact on the lives of players across the league than forgiving failed drug tests.

Believing the NFL should do more for the players is fine, and I won't argue that. Believing the NFL should turn a blind eye to failed drug tests because of the belief that the NFL should do more for the players is just ridiculous. There are countless ways the NFL could support the players across the league that don't involve enabling addiction.

I've read somewhere. May have been from Fish's site that Randy is taking a legal treatment for his bipolar depression issues. Has been clean for around two years.

Great to hear. If what I've read is true, Randy is probably going to get reinstated. I'll believe it when I see it but it would add a great story to the season if its true. His problem has always been mental, I hope he did kick the habit for his sake. If he puts that energy toward football he can still end up being a very good DE

I never said they should turn a blind eye to it. I'm saying they should do more for their players if they truly care about their well-being.

And how is it a insult to players who don't smoke weed? They will have the same benefits as those that do. If they chose not to smoke weed than that's their decision. But its not just a few guys smoking weed. As a matter of fact the majority do. Smoking weed or not smoking weed is a choice. Its not like some advantage players get to where other players will be upset. Its about this LEAGUE being held responsible for the players well being. The only time they care to do something is when domestic issues are involved. And even then its not about getting help for them its about saving face.

The NFL owes it to themselves to do more for these players. Not just the ones that smoke weed but ALL of them.

BTW, not all players use weed for recreational use. Some use it for pain management.

There are strains with no THC for medicinal purposes...... but players shouldn't be self-medicating

Just get drunk like the old days

SMH...you guys really need to get with the times. Weed is less harmful the cigarettes and liquor yet, the NFL allows it. Players have come out and said weed helps them during the rehabilitating process.

I dont need to "get with" anything ........ I know the benefits "weed" has in recovery from workouts to health benefits ala Cancer and seizures.

But to sit here and claim these young athletes are smoking weed for pain management is disingenuous ....... 99% of them are getting high for recreational use.

Smoking weed... smoking anything, is much more likely to cause cancer than help, treat or cure it.

The safest way, by far, to consume cannabis is to bake it in a fatty, liquid substance... butter, nutella, peanut butter, meringue/marshmallow/egg goo, etc.

That is a big pile of hogwash. Players get tested during OTA's and and then randomly during the season. If the majority of players used weed even for pain mamangement there would be a very large number of suspensions for the use of weed and as we all know there is usually only about 2 to 4 a year. Whether they use it for pain management or not right now it's still a banned substance. Besides any active player that needs something for pain can get it from the team doctors at any time during the year including the off season. You just want it to be the majority of players use weed for whatever reason but that's the furthest from the truth.

Yes whatever is done needs to be done for all not just those that smoke weed but there's not a lot the NFL can do without drastically changing the game and if they do they they may lose fans which will lose sponsors and then network TV deals and then it's lights out for good.
