One thing people need to remember is that giving long term contracts to players that might be suspended is actually less risky than to players that you don't anticipate to get suspended.

Step 1: We sign Gregory to a long-term extension
Step 2: He relapses and gets suspended
Step 3: The guaranteed portion of his contract is vioded due to suspension(Like Zeke, Doug Martin, etc)
Step 4: We cut Gregory with no dead cap space

Go back and watch his last game. He will be the right edge rusher as soon as he gets into football shape. He's already in athletic shape.

The process around drug suspensions is supposed to be confidential. That HIPPA. The public should actually get far less information than we do

The NFL suspension itself is not covered by HIPPA. Only the medical records they review duing the process.

Failure of an NFL drug test is not private. The players agreed to that in the CBA.

Certain other medical information is also not private as part of the CBA. Coaches can discuss player's injuries to the extent the coach understands the injury. They can discuss what Doctor's have told them.

What coaches can't do without permission is reveal the actual medical reports, X-Rays, etc.. without player permission.

Don't think HIPPA comes into play since this isn't about his health (technically) but about will he be allowed into this private club as a performer. His test results and personal health data are not being revealed by the NFL, Cowboys, or himself. We can assume about such health info but I haven't read or heard anything. He can release his own data or allow The League to at his discretion.

It would take at least 3 years of consistently good play for me trust Randy Gregory for any kind of commitment. A ten sack season would not be enough proof that he’s turned a corner. RG has a loooong way to go to be considered someone we can trust as an every day player.

10 sacks would go a long way, how about 18 sacks???

Actually the content of the failure is confidential. The league cannot report what he tested positive for. In fact, the league doesn't say "failed test: - it is simply a violation of the policy. We technically should never know I'd buy was missed tests or a failed test.

The CBS trumps HIPPA regarding injury disclosure as that is relevant to competitive balance and other issues (e.g. gamblers not being able to get an advantage with inside information). There is no reason for the CBA to loosen confidentiality for drug offenses.

A ten sack season from RG, Hayes, and I am doing the happy dance all over my house and counting down till his extension. Two in a row, and I might change my marriage proposal in my header. Two years of consistency we begin the talks of re-signing him; for me at least, it's relevant and worthy debate, then.

We absolutely lock him up if he is consistent for three years, that's a no-brainer. When his contract is a year from up -- we need to -- if he's put out two high-effort, productive seasons, start to look at an extension. His past can be forgotten if he performs, a la Von Miller. We can probably land him for 2-3M aav less than a similar counterpart with same numbers. Because he smoked weed and some GMs will be scared he may revert.

I am not at all hesitant to say that RG has Von Miller potential in spades

I would be thrilled if that happened- for the Cowboys and even more so for a young man who has battled some major personal demons for a very long time. RG has been his own worst enemy.

1 game in the 2016 season. Great but that is very little to go by. Hell if I was going to judge a player on 1 game then Taco is going to be a beast but few here would claim that. Fact is Gregory has a lot to prove. I'm glad he is in shape as you say but he has to go out and earn this, it should not be a given he has not done anything for it to be a given. I don't want to see some young guy out there making plays and ends up getting cut just to ensure Gregory gets a spot. I expect Gregory like every player to go out and earn it.

Yes! And we are all very excited and eager to see Randy come back, beat the odds, shut up thr naysayers and help his team. I for one am estatic!

There are probably as many as 20 who could be released today without a care.

Correct. Unless the league rules the two games at the end of 2016 as an accrued season, after which they suspended him for the playoffs. Which would be complete BS and leave us with two tewm controlled years.
