What benefit is there to Gregory to sign a team friendly deal?

Lot's of advantages of course. Gregory is a top 15 talent that Dallas got in the 2nd round. I think he can get 12 to 15 sacks from him yearly. If we don't have to break the bank on a passrusher we can spend the money on other needs on defense.

I'm not assuming Gregory will be the reincarnation of the ultimate DE. I'm just hoping he'll be reasonably effective as a starting DE. Paired with Demarcus Lawrence, he should assist the Cowboys pass rush in becoming an effective force in 2021. Anything more than that will be gravy. We also have some promising rotational DEs that should make our defense quite capable of having many good games.

Do you think Dan Quinn used that phrase just because he's an employee of the Cowboys? As if he wouldn't use that phrase while attached to any other franchise. Do you think he gets an approved list of phrases to use from the front office? If so, he could probably refer back to that said list of approved phrases when a team is above 500, or when the team is only playing with 4 offensive linemen. Only in Dallas, right?

The question was in regard to Gregory taking less money, the advantages for the team are obvious.

Bit I agree with you that the team should approach him about a contract extension. If he’s truly about to blossom into the player they’d always hoped, it would be a shame to watch him leave town after the incredible amount of patience they’ve shown with him.

I heard on one of the Cowboys podcasts that Dan Quinn is not only the defensive coordinator, but the de facto defensive line coach as well. Durde is essentially his assistant in that regard. To me, that’s a plus, along with George Edwards being the true linebackers coach.

We need to just lock him up now with a team friendly contract. Regardless of Probowler or now, he is our best passrusher by far and it would be a travesty to just let him go to the highest bidder.

They already messed up with Dak's contract, don't mess this up by not signing up to a team friendly deal.

Completely agree but I see no way he is going to do that. This next contract is basically his life rolled up into one big contract. Plus he feels like the Cowboys coaches screwed him big time last year.

But I still don't see the benefit to Gregory. If he goes off this year, he can shop his services around the league. Why would he accept a team friendly that isn't going to pay him market value? Especially when he is already behind as far as getting a second contract.

I can see both sides of the coin....if we can get him for a good deal, somewhat like we did with Lael, then it benefits the team, especially if he truly has that breakthrough year. But what if he has 6-8 sacks? Is that a good deal for the team? IT is almost like we have to overpay him now to hopefully get him for a good price in the future....assuming he becomes that 10-15 sack per year guy. For Gregory...if he busts out with 12-15 this year...he can sign a huge deal for full value next year. Does he want to bet on himself?

2. I have to think that Gregory has some measure of loyalty to a certain degree. Jerry Jones and this organization stood by him when absolutely no one else would have. If not for Jerry, this young man’s career would already be over. That loyalty should count for something.

These make some sense and I had thought about the loyalty issue. It's just hard to say what a fair value is. Based on production, which admittedly is limited by his prior availability, I would think the price would be very reasonable. But if he is what people seem to want him to be..a reasonable offer might be seen as a slap in the face.

It was evident last year that he was our best pass rusher while on the field and he they wouldn’t play him. That’s why they are on unemployment now.

Sad will be the team that rewards Gregory with guaranteed money after one year of production in a contract year. I hope we get tons of sacks from him this year then say thanks for the memories. Dude will be 29 years old in November. His career is not just getting started. It is pretty much over. Lets get what we can. Be thankful we got anything then move on.

As a pure pass rusher, he should be better than Lawrence. He has the speed and the bend to go with good length to disengage. If he had not had the marijuana issues, he would have been a first-rounder. Lawrence didn't show ability to be a first-rounder. What he has shown is that he'll work hard to maximize what he has, which makes him one of the better all-around ends in the league. Some Cowboys fans don't seem to appreciate that, though.

Hopefully, both players will play at a high level and even get some help from the interior because that will create even more one-on-one matches for them.

Well, we've only waited like 6 years, so I would hope so.

That's one thing I admire about Jerry Jones. He doesn't kick players w/issues sort if speak, to the curb. Jerry gives many players 2nd & 3rd chances. He's always been like that.

None.......I said in another thread, fans shouldn't expect a 'you stood by me' discount either (lol). Just my guess but even if he balls out, Stephen will give him a choice, take a low-ball/ average long-term deal OR franchise tag.
