It's cartilage that pads the bones in the knee. Trimming some is minor, but some players have had more removed which leads to bone on bone and microfracture surgery that isn't always successful.

Arthroscopic surgery, no structural damage, just the clean it out, or as I read on Bleacher report, trim it .

Removing rather than repairing the meniscus gets you back on the field quicker, but could cause more problems down the line - read: arthritis.
