I put together the attached to take a look at how much free agent defensive linemen are returning on the field. It seems like the best approach for the Cowboys will be to go over guys that require 2-6M in terms of guaranteed money, because while the top-tier guys are a better bet for a monster 10+ sack season they also command a ridiculous amount of guaranteed money and they are no sure thing to deliver the production that they cost.

The best defense in the league is arguably Seattle and their leading sacker in 2014 had 7 sacks and their leading sacker in 2013 had 8.5 sacks. If I'm Jerry Jones I'd attack the edge rusher position with a high pick in the 2015 draft, along with several flier-type contracts on 2nd tier rushers. The cost of a top level guy is just not worth it when you consider the risk involved with a flop of a contract.

This is all well and fine, but having a player like Jeremy Mincey is why the Cowboys are at home right now.

I agree with looking for an affordable de that looks to be reliable and plays with effort right now rather than risk paying a big contract - unless of course it was a young player that is a sure thing. But then teams don't let those guys go

I think they should use 1st round pick on best d lineman available either de or dt

The moral of the story is that elite pass rushers are coveted, and they are held onto unless you have a real terrible salary cap situation. Their original team has had a chance to evaluate them in house and knows what they bring to the table and the truly elite guys are locked up. Then you have the pass rushers that reach free agency who command elite salaries, but generally don't provide elite production.

Definitely. The Cowboys need to draft and develop their own pass rushers.

Yes. This is exactly right. Which is why I agree with build through draft and use free agency to find depth and shore up weak spots until young players can be developed.

It contributed, but Aaron Rodgers being able to stand in the pocket clean on one leg might indicate you have a problem upfront.

Yes. I'm really interested to see how the packers offensive game plan is tweaked to account for Rodgers injury against Seattle defense.

Early nomination for worst post of 2015.

If the D-line had 8 Jeremy Minceys, we'd be getting ready to play Seattle.

Believe that if you want to, but he is a sub-par starter. He plays hard and I like him, but he's not good. If you think he's good you need to watch more football.

Sounds good in theory but it depends on how much we can get a 2nd tier guy mcphee. If there is a chance to get JPp or Hardy then I would try real hard to make it work.
