The Evil Dead (1981, Sam Raimi director)
I guess there is a more current remake of this film - who knew? Not me.
Wow, this one...it's like great direction meets B-movie with some actual real frights. Oh and let's also use every scary mechanism ever invented while we're at it - fast moving camera through the woods (er, and house at the end) with evil soundtrack, while we can never see what's "coming", girl falls down running away, evil non-stop laughter from the evil one(s), chants of "We're gonna get you!", etc. And it strongly reminded me of another later Sam Raimi film, in terms of the lead actor guy in the film, who I THOUGHT I recognized...yep, sure enough, the one & only star of "Army of Darkness", Bruce Campbell. He gave kind of a foreshadowing performance in this film of how he would react to the evil in the later "Army" film. It was really on the edge of my brain while watching this "Dead" film, but couldn't place it until this morning (I watched the film last night).
For all of the tried and true horror tricks, etc., overall I thought this film just worked pretty well for what it is, and doesn't pretend to be. Highly recommended if you are in to these kinds of films.
