Ladell Betts considered hitting the lucrative free-agent market in 2007, but he opted to go with the safe money of the Washington Commanders.
Betts, 28, signed a five-year extension Friday worth $11 million, but the key was in the early payout of the deal. He got $3.5 million in signing bonus money this year and a $2 million roster bonus in 2007. With half of the money going to him early, Betts figured it was the best of all worlds.

another BAD MOVE from that bad GM lol

He is a good backup. I don't know how that ranks him salary wise compared to other backup running backs.

It is as if the Cardinals never left the division once Daniel Snyder took over in Washington.

haha. The Skins are at it again. He's had what, less than half of season's worth of decent games...

What does that say about Portis though? Betts is a good back......up lol. Thats way to much to pay for a backup. I honestly don't think the skins could be THAT stupid. I wouldn't be suprised if it was rb by comittee from here on out. Portis is just too injury prone. With that said, they need to restructure his rediculous contract or just let him go.

Betts has done a decent job as the starter and is a good backup. Now I really question that that makes him worth THAT much.

He's a good runningback, could be starting for a few teams in the league... 11 mill over 5 years works out to a little over 2 a year, seems like a very reasonable deal to me, especially given Portis' fragility as of late.

Agreed. I think he has done a good job for them and I think he is a good signing for them to keep.

That price tag seems a bit much.

I have to wonder how much every contract, not just the skins, will go up as the salary cap raises now.

What's funny is that the Skins Backup RB makes more than the starting QB for the Cowboys.

Of course that won't last for long though.

I was just gonna post something similar to this, but you beat me to it. Yes i know when it comes to the Skins and Contracts its pretty safe to assume it will be a ridiculous one, but this one is very reasonable i think. Betts has been valuable to us and its good to see we finally sign one of our own.

actually he is a good tough player. This was smart on their part he would have become a highly sought after player on the open market.

For once the skins are actually spending money where they should.

The only catch is this is a league where you can get running backs in any round of the draft and pay them low salaries. The Commanders track record in the draft suggests they should never rely on the draft though.

I actually see this as a good signing for the Skins. The price tag is a little high, but he provides good insurance for Portis. I would also be willing to bet that he will see a lot more carries even when Portis is healthy. This signing also means that Duckett is most likely gone. Can the Skins give up some more draft picks this offseason to overrated free agents?

Why are we talkin about this garbage team?

We are having a great season. Many are picking us for the Super Bowl and we are America's Team.

Don't pollute the forum with crap about that garbage franchise. They are the most expensive pile of junk in NFL history, and should be banned because they have no significance to the NFL, or its history.

Lets close this stupid thread and worry about the important stuff...like teams that will actually be playing in January. Let these idiots spend their money and do whatever the #@% else they want. It shouldn't matter to us.

The salary cap for 2007 works out to almost 2 million dollars per player and that numbers only going to rise by when this deal ends in 2011/12.

It's a bargain to wrap up a player like Betts for what's going to look like chump change in a few years even if he's never more than a 10 touch a game type backup.

This is actually pretty scary for Cowboys' fans in that it looks like the Commanders' FO may have a clue after all. Pray to God that they never figure out financial responsibility in the FA market or that draft picks are something to be valued.

The Skins FO has banked on the fact that the salary cap goes up every year, this is why they havent hit salary cap hell. thats how they get away with their annual shopping sprees. its the trading of their draft picks and refusing to build through the draft that i hope they dont figure out.:starspin
