I hope "Spirited" bytes him some day, Spirit of the Salary cap, spirited discussions. I bet NFLPA will remember the spirit next time.

Spirits indeed, I am so sick of this guy.

I posted this elsewhere, stupid rule because it will be enforced to the letter of rule when there are so many variables that come into play prior to contact. If Murray Zigs and dives for a first down and the defender zags and makes contact with murray's helmet it would be a penalty. That is the problem I have with the stupid helmet rule for QBs. If ratliff jumps in the air to swat a ball and the qb steps up and ratliff's follow throw touches the helmet a penalty. There should be incidental contact written into these rule because there are too many variables that are uncontrollable in the flow of the game.

Mara is the head of the owners committee or something like that.

You can pretty be sure that what he wants is pretty much what the owners want.

That's why it sucks that he's saying it.

The rules are designed / discussed by the Competition Committee who is co chaired by:
Rich McKay President of the Atlanta Falcons
and
Jeff Fisher of the St. Louis Rams

Mars is just a member on the committee along with six others. Total of 9.

He didn't institute the rule, and I agree with you it's a dumb rule, HOWEVER, defensive players have been complaining that the new "safety" rules only apply to the offensive side of the ball, and it wasn't fair to them, hence the running back rule. If you give it some thought, there are applications that come into effect:

There has to be "x" amount of yards between the ball carrier and the defensive player before he can hit him or something like that.

I imagined they looked at how defensive players "speared" offensive players with the crown of their helmet ala James Harrison, so how could they allow offensive players to do it. I agree, it's human instinct to protect your face/head when you know there is going to be an impact,so you lower it. It's all about safety and that class action lawsuit thousands of former players have against the NFL.

If an edge rusher hits a QB after he releases the ball, it's usually a penalty, but it used to be that if he hits him after the release, I remember Madden years ago saying (when no flags were thrown) that it's called "man in motion". They didn't throw flags back then, because the refs knew the defender couldn't just put the brakes on and stop.

Then came along sissy Brady who wants a flag if someone breathes on him.

Passed 31-1 with Cincy being the only team to vote against it.

RB getting in trouble for trying to gain leverage.

NFL is dying to me. not really exciting anymore with all the rules.

Bryant Gumbel had a couple of doctors on his HBO show a few years ago who presented pretty compelling anecdotal evidence that multiple concussions sustained over a period of years were the direct cause of Lou Gehrig's Disease. If a more exhaustive study should show this to be true, big changes will be in order.

The threat of law suits is ruining the game we love.

This by far is the worst rule they've implemented to date.

The NFL is making the game worse by taking away crushing blows that often injure players.

Oh woe is me, game sux now, why can't I keep watching players get killed?? Waaaahhh! ;)

I still love this game, nothing is really changing much.

I had something planned to say, but, your sig pic says it all...

Yep, looks like I will be going to more Hockey games and my wife will be happy that more Sundays will be spent at home, and, I won't be spending so much on a bar tab watching a game that men used to play.

I dont understand. These men all went to college, they should know that violently colliding with other grown men isnt exactly healthy or safe. They make the choice to play. They get paid ALOT OF MONEY. Go play baseball if you dont like the long term health consequences.

I work for a medical news organization (so I read new studies literally every day), and there has been a host of studies in the previous year that pretty definitively link concussions to neurological problems.

I understand we're all up in arms in the way the game is changing, and the players get paid to play a game, but the player's health should be priority number 1.

Oh yeah, that's pretty fair to the players. Take millions of dollars and shut-up about your health. Or go work at Foot Locker. Right? That kind of attitude is ridiculous and exploits people who, typically, have an underprivileged background.

There's no good excuse not to protect people's health while still providing a great sport. None. Fans can complain all they want, but the game is still the game and the competition remains the same.

The game won't cease to interest me because there's less concussions and people seizing in the shower afterwards.
