Randle's problem is that if the play is not perfectly blocked he tries to get creative instead of taking what is there. There is not enough time to get creative in the NFL, once you hesitate then there is no holes and you are not bouncing it outside of a player that has outside leverage already. Basically I think Randle is greedy and he doesn't understand that a 3-4 yard run is better than a 0 or -1 yard run trying to make something not designed happen. He does it pretty consistently. He does not trust his blocks and delays his cuts an extra step or two and it's too late to recover from it. McFadden seems to follow the play call for the most part, but there have definitely been some blocking issues at the second level. Defenses are slanting, shifting making it harder to reach block and get leverage and they know to hold the linemen as they try to reach the second level. It's been a combination of issues, but it has not been as bad as the RB's have made it look in many cases. Very interested to see how CMike plays

The blocking has not been good enough. McFadden has followed the blocking as coached.

Can't we just agree that the Raiders were not interested in keeping McFadden.
They felt it was better for their organization if he plays somewhere else this year.

Not sure if I would call it desperation. That would be letting our FO off the hook too much. It's worse to say they targeted him and he was the plan to complement Joey Randle all along.

The FO overrated the offensive line. Almost everyone did.

If Michael doesn't end up being the real deal I fully expect the FO to change their cheap RBBC plan this coming offseason.

McFadden would have been an ideal backup to Murray last season. He is not the guy you want when the blocking is struggling and defenses are loading up against the run.

The running game simply isn't going to really get going until defenses have to worry about the passing game as much or more than they do the run. That likely won't happen until Romo is back playing.

That is just the way I see it.

Getting Dez back will help but until defenses are back having to cover the entire field and worry about the pass, the run game is going to be easier to stop than it was last year... no matter if Dallas still had Murray or not.

Getting La'el Collins in there will help and by the second half of the season, if he's still starting, the OL will be better. However, it still is either going to take Cassell playing straight up great or Romo coming back to really jump start the run.

There are many "good enough" blocks by RBs every week in the NFL. He blocked a pass rusher to the point that the players shoes were 3 feet in the air, yet due to Weed's lack of awareness, that player was able to come back down and sack Weed. The rusher would have not have been in the same zip code as Romo in that situation.

Yes, the RB coach said that McFadden is running exactly as they've coached him to run but that the blocking needs to be better.

Well I never was making the argument if Randle was better than Murray. One thing I will say is the biggest difference between now and last year was when Murray was hit in the backfield he could turn a negative gain into a 2 or 3 yard gain. We don't have that now. Murray was a special back last season. You'll get no argument from me saying otherwise. I'm not going to fault Randle for not getting yards when he's hit in the backfield. That's not the back he is. Never was.

He did "knock him in the air". There was a replay view from the end zone. If you watch that view in slow motion you can see it. The defenders feet wouldn't fly up in the air if there was no contact. There was a period of time when the only part of the defender that was touching the ground was 1 of his hands. That does not happen without contact.
