RB situation

If the preseason is any indication, I don't see a fullback making the 53. With the injury to Stephens, it sort of sets up the top 3, with Ferg-Schoon-Hendershot with McKeon being a PS guy again imo with callups as need be.

For the RB position you got two locks. Jones suspension won't make him count towards the 53(nor does he get paid) the first two weeks so you could put him on the initial roster in parenthesis.

I think Dowdle beats out Davis for the 3rd spot-unless he injuries himself again.

So, the only question is when it comes down to the cutdowns, do they want to have Davis on the 53 or are they willing to cut him to waivers and hope he makes the P.S.
With the glut of RB talent in the league for #2-3 RBs I think he makes the P.S.

At this point I don't think you can let Davis sit because he is the only one who has stayed healthy. I see it as Pollard, Rico as your primary backs with Deuce being worked in on 3rd downs and Davis being used for mop up duty. The Cowboys should be smart and rotate backs because it's a long season and you definitely want Pollard healthy for playoffs.

Pollard - lock for #1 obviously

Dowdle - #2 by a decent amount to start the year. Also I read how he was pretty good in pass protection and he has returned kicks and been the punt protector (even though that went poorly). It seems he is being groomed for all of the different roles a backup RB needs to play on the game day roster.

Deuce - lock to make the 53. I think we will get a few 3rd down opportunities as both a receiver and a runner. We will try to get him the ball in space and hope for some dynamic plays. I think by the end of the season he will be the #2.

Davis PS guy. I think some were way too high on him all along. I like his potential and think if injury strikes he could be more for us, but the team always seemed to have him behind Dowdle. I do like that Davis hits the hole quickly.

Luepke - wild card. I thought he might make the roster due to STs and FB/HB ability and possibly as a bull in short yardage, but he hasn't played either FB or HB at all during the preseason games and has fallen down on half of his runs without barely being touched like he is leaning forward waiting to get hit or something. No idea what they will do with him. I still think an outside shot he makes the game day roster.

Jones - cut him

Veteran pickup after cut down day may happen as well
Why do you think they should cut RJones?

He has more TDs than Tony and is the only other experienced RB we have.

I know he's hurt and has the 2 game sus hanging over him. But we need the help.

In the regular season, yes. Needs to be running back by committee to keep Pollard fresh
Fresh for what? He’s been a backup his whole career including college. We have him on a one year deal. This is not the time to try and reserve him lol.

I trust Rojo more than any anyone not named Pollard. Not sure why people are just writing him off.

I think we're going to pass a lot, there's going to be no balance, a few runs here and there just to say we did it. Get back in that boring shotgun formation as usual and let it rip!!
Not according to MM. He claims we’re going to be a run heavy team. I’d prefer more balance .

Dowdle is more of a lock than Vaughn. He clearly separated himself last night as RB2. The Cowboys have started him the past two preseason games. Vaughn will make the team, but he’s currently our fourth back behind Malik Davis who made some plays last night.
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Malik Davis started the first preseason game.

Part of it is the suspension. I would have cut him the day he was suspended. Beyond that, I just don't think he is any good. Until Pacheco stepped up last year KC was looking for guys to be get some carries as they rotate guys. They even signed Melvin Gordon to the PS late in the year. Jones never really played with them at all. His last year in TB when I watched him he just didn't look very good. Lastly and just as important, he doesn't play STs. You can't have a RB on the roster who isn't likely to get snaps on offense who doesn't play STs. I don't see any reason to keep him at all. If he wants to sign as a vet on the PS I'm ok with that but I'm not looking for an older back who is at best average. I'd rather roll the dice.

If we want to win in the playoffs, we need weapons such as Pollard. We can still win in the regular season by using him sensibly

I missed the first few minutes of the game, but he might have started. He only had four carries. Dowdle got most of the carries.

So he has to be reserved he can’t play at a high level in the regular season and playoffs?

I think he's an insurance plan all the way. If he fits, cool, but I don't want him taking the roster spot of someone who could contribute on a larger scale, whoever that might be.

The reason I say this is I think Malik Davis can clear waivers and be available for a call-up in case of injury to a RB. It's a gamble any way you look at it.

Actually Vaughn got the most carries in Week 1. And it's true that Dowdle got more carries than Davis, but 6-4 isn't much of a difference, and could have as much to do with circumstances during possessions they were in as anything. The split was 8-8 the second game.

I will say that Dowdle has looked a little better than Davis in the first 2 preseason games though. I've kind of been Team Davis, but Dowdle is showing more than I expected. I really don't like either being the primary backup though

It’s going to be Pollard and Dowdle at RB1 and RB2 to start the season. There could be a committee at RB2 with Dowdle, Davis and Vaughn until Ronald Jones returns. If one of those players don’t emerge, it could be a committee all season. We’ll keep one of them fresh for the fourth quarter. That could end up being a pretty good plan.

I think that's a decent enough plan if Pollard stays healthy, but if Pollard goes down I don't believe that committee is sufficient to maintain a strong running game. That's what I'm concerned with - having someone that will be strong and consistent if Pollard gets hurt.

Chances are Pollard is going come up with some injury this season. I believe he missed one game last year with something. Right now we’re stuck with what we have. Hopefully the situation doesn’t reach the point where we’re looking to make a trade for a back early in the season.
