Sure, but if you want to be good, you need to make the sort of decisions that good teams do

I'm not disagreeing with you, I don't think there's any way you let a guy like him go. He and Smith should be complete no-brainers, they are key to the future success of the team.

Jerry has invested too much personal time and energy to see Dez dominate somewhere else.

Like it or not, Dez is a home run story for Jerry and he's not giving one of those up.

And out of all the things Dallas does that could be addressed to be more like the good teams, you'd start by letting Dez walk?

He's not going to get Larry Fitzerald or Calvin Johnson money. Fitz signed his contract after proving that he was arguably the best receiver in the game and Calvin Johnson is an extreme physical anomaly.

Demaryius Thomas' contract will be up the same year. And I believe Julio Jones will be a UFA the following year. Gordon the year after that.

I just don't think he's separated himself from the pack enough to warrant that much money.

He'll probably get between 11.5 and 12.5 a year.

Agreed- Dez is my favorite player, but we shouldn't mortgage our teams future on a WR. Granted he is one of the best WR in the league he has had some back issues. Pay Tyron all the money in the world and call it a day.

he will get resigned to a ton of money, because he sells jersey's and puts arses in the seats. and that translates to money in Jerry's pocket. money will over rule logic.

It's ok. He should not be in jail. Just traded.

If you've got a good reason why he should be traded, I probably won't put up an argument-- he's probably our best trade chip. But if maturity is the issue you have, I think that's pretty flimsy.

Opportunity costs, plain and simple.

This team loves to get top heavy around players and that doesn't translate to wins for us.

For every dollar you give one player at one position, you're taking money away from another position and/or depth.

How many players does Dez equal? 2 to 4 stud defensive players and maybe 2 first round draft picks? Potentially 6 players? I don't think he equals that.

The principle is fine. I don't agree that Dez equals that many stud defensive players, though. You might be able to reallocate cap space to get 2 A players on defense in FA for the money you might spend on Dez... maybe not even that. Maybe an A player and a B type player that just needs to be in the right scheme.

That said, my reply was specifically to theSHOW who seemed to be basing his motive on 'Dez is immature'.

Do you think you could trade dez for two high draft picks? Do you think for 16 million dollars you could sign 3 players at 5 million each or 4 players at 4 million each? Minimum I think you could get 4 players through free agency and the draft for what it takes to keep Dez. I'm not sure that is worth it. What are the chances that Dez has a bad game? What are the chances that all 4 of those players have bad games... By spreading out the salary cap you reduce risk and increase the chance of having production. We have very few mid value players and as a result there is a huge drop off from when it comes to our stars and regular starters.

When those stars underperform, we lose games. When those stars are injured, those injuries become a huge deal because the drop off is significant. I don't think I would pay any player outside of the QB and maybe LT more than 7 million or 8 million per year, and I certainly wouldn't get a whole bunch of these guys.

We currently have 5 of those guys, three of which aren't carrying their weight. 5% of your salary cap on one guy is huge. When you have 5 players all of 5% that results in 25% of your salary cap based on just 5 guys... what happens when they don't play well?

Yeah you could probably get a 1st, 3rd and late round pick. Or maybe a 1st and a 2nd. But I don't think that means you necessarily get 2 stud defensive players out of it. I think you have a good shot of getting decent players, but it's not a slam dunk.

Even FA is not a slam dunk, but at least it's not a crap shoot. I think you could legitimately get 2 good to great defensive players on defense in FA for the money you'd save on Dez.

But that's all before you get back to replacing Dez. Obviously you don't want to spend money in FA for a WR because you just let one go. Or at least BIG money.

Or do you want to spend one of those picks you got on finding a talented receiver in the draft?

I agree in principle. You want more draft picks and more guys playing for less money. You don't want a handful of guys taking up a good chunk of your salary cap (although I believe the Giants were able to succeed under this model in 2011). Trading Dez would help with that tremendously. But does it mean you get a return on your investment?

That's why some are saying, "When you have a special player, don't let him get away". Obviously within reason.

Megatron is the best in the game .....by far ..... and he isn't worth 16 million per year. LOL. Your number one receiver is going to get paid big bucks (if he is truly a legit #1) unless he is on his rookie contract. That is why I am not opposed to spending a first round pick on a receiver. It protects your salary cap.

Dez is a very good receiver, but there is a case that there are 10-15 receivers in the game who are as good as or better than him, if you take off the rose colored glasses. I think it would be fair to take the top 15 contracts and pay him the average per year price of the top 15 contracts. He may not be worth that much money, in reality, but to some extent that is all relative. He is worth that much relative to what other teams are paying even if he is not worth that as to the cap as a whole. But it would be pretty hard to argue that paying Dez big money isn't a real risk.

The suggestion put out there was to use our own 1st round draft pick on mike evans this year.

We've had DeMarcus Ware for years, yet we've never really had a great defense. It's because while he has been really great for us, he has never been the type of player to consistently take over games. Yet we pay him like he does.

We have a franchise QB, I'd make the argument that you shouldn't be paying anyone on offense except maybe that left tackle. And when it is time for Romo to hang the cleats up, you get rid of another top heavy player.

If you have capable players across the board, you have a much higher chance at success.

If you look at the 2013 Patriots, outside of Tom Brady and Logan Mankins not a single player on offense had a cap hit above 5 million dollars... That is spreading out the cap. On defense both Wilfork and Meyo were barely above 5 million.

You have to get cheaper, not more expensive. If someone is making over 5 million dollars, they need to produce for you, because you can break things down even more when you look at the type of players you can get for 2-3 million dollars. And that is 5 million let alone 16 million...
