Reading too many stories on how Dallas needs to lose

First it was Michael Irvin last week saying he thinks it would be good for Dallas to lose game and re-focus after pain of that loss. This week its Tony Dungy saying "The worst thing that can happen is winning in December but not playing well. You start believing your team is better than you are."

Articles are coming out basically saying Cowboys will loss to Giants and it will be good thing. I am not sure I agree with this thinking because there is nothing normal about whats going on in Dallas. Rookie QB & RB have never gone on this kind of streak in NFL history. So to speak - we are already off the grid.

No rookie QB has ever started a Super Bowl game. Super Bowls started in 1967 so it will be 50 years this January. Personally, this team has already exceeded all expectations and if they don't reach super bowl I will not be disappointed. Just keep winning and learning because I think we are looking at 12 win team for next few years with multiple shots at super bowl.

I thought we were going to lose to the Vikings. My feeling was basically that the Cowboys can't keep winning forever (and the Vikings can't keep losing forever). I'd rather the Cowboys win every week, but if we have to lose I sure would rather get it out of the way before the playoffs.

I agree its a silly talking point. However, if we hold on to the 1 seed do not at least make the Super Bowl it would be a disappointment in my eyes.

I started hearing this from people at work and then I saw it was on some of the talk shows which I usually don't watch.

Looks like someone said it first and now everyone is just repeating it over and over again.

It is a stupid thing that stupid people say on TV that other stupid people watching will repeat

They never say in it college football

The pressure isn't any greater if you are on a win streak or undefeated

Jimmy Johnson didn't say "put it in 3 inch headlines...we want to lose so we don't get too cocky"

College is different obviously where winning every game is necessary for ranking and championship consideration.

Why do we have to lose, why should we lose a game...screw that, let's go 18-1.

Did people say the Dolphins need a loss in their undefeated season...did people yap about NE needing to lose when they were undefeated going into the SB.
Only a very lucky catch and inch away won it for the Giants.

No, we don't need a loss to refocus...they are still focused. And a win like this past one will remind them to stay even more focused.
Jason in his locker room speech to the team, told them this is why they gave them shirts and jackets at the start of TC that said FIGHT...and that is what they did was fight for a win....and he told them this was his favorite win of the season so far.

First off there is nothing ever good about losing to the giants (or the eagles or the skins). Second, A win like this is the best type win when you're on a long winning streak...it serves as a reminder how hard wins are and that if you don't stay focus how easy a win could become a loss. It also gives the coaches things to keep riding you on to keep you focused.

Now if you play like this for the full month of December and come away with 5 wins, it does become a major concern, but not for the reasons Dungy stated. A month of bad wins doesn't mean you go into the playoffs overconfident....it means you go into the playoffs with glaring weaknesses that have been exposed and will be much harder to overcome against the top teams.

It doesn't apply to the NFL either...the goals are the same.....ranking and a championship...HFA matters

You forget to take the Bradford effect into account. :)

It is a stupid idea, especially with this team.

Maybe if one of those Wade Phillips teams had a long winning streak, then losing would have been needed because those teams had an incredible sense of entitlement and no discipline.

This team at Garrett's insistence has almost all RKG type players that don't need to lose to keep working hard.

The media has to have something to talk about. Sports Radio Talk Show hosts often have 4 hours to kill every day.

Right...but this is only fodder for the regular season. Post-season everyone starts at zero. This team is more mature and less naive than some will acknowledge. They still have that sting from the loss at Green Bay two years ago. I can imagine their disappointment and shock at how it ended...and I'm sure that most haven't forgotten it...perhaps reminded by Garrett, that there is some unfinished business from 2014.

However, there's "some" truth to what Dungy said. Down the stretch in 2006, his Colts had a run defense meltdown on-route to the playoffs (375 rushing yds surrendered at Jacksonville)...and they produced only 24 sacks that season...fewest of any Super Bowl winner in history. They also had probably the worst run defense (173 yds/pg) of any SuperBowl winner...but in the playoffs they kept all teams they faced under 100 yds rushing. It was only in the Superbowl that they gave up 111 yds on the ground.

Dungy is going senile. I can't even watch him talk anymore.

The difference is, games we probably should have lost, we ended up winning.

That's a good thing. You can have adversity, and even a bad game, without losing.
