Realistic contract for Shultz

If and when we sign him, what kind of deal is he worth?? I say 4 years 16-20 million???

He is not getting his long term contract from Dallas. They will be drafting his replacement this year and let Schultz go FA next season. They will likely get a 4th or 5th round pick for him. Just keep feeding the
pipeline with players and let the guys up for big deals get them from the other teams. TE is not a power 5 position and second contracts should be rare and only for "all pros".

Take the franchise tag number and multiply by 4 or 5 and that's probably the starting point of negotiating. If you offered Schultz 4 to 5 million a year they would leave the room disrespected.

5yr-68m 30m guaranteed
15mil signing bonus.

First year min salary+signing bonus hit.
2nd year inflate the salary or add a roster bonus in there to restructure.
Years 3-5 would be in the higher cap ceiling frame.

:lmao::huh::facepalm:

OMG...that would put him at about 26th in AAV pay for TEs...you really think he is the 26th best TE in the league? I mean that would put him on part with TJ Hokenson...you know who that is!? I bet you don't

I swear, there must be something in the water where you live...

A realistic contract for Shultz would be on another team if it were up to me. I don't think he's any better than average. Yeah, Shultz can get open on an inside LB when most of the attention is on our wideouts and Lamb. Once more attention is focused on him due to our lack of talent at WR, Shultz will be who he always was, a JAG.

Cowboys want to see how things plays out in a thin market for tight ends this offseason. If the Cowboys try to slow play things by waiting a year, they could end up paying top dollar to keep Schultz. Their history suggests they don't feel compelled to act quickly in negotiations w/players who get tagged.

Getcha Popcorn Ready!

I think 4 years 48m.

IMO he's worth a little under the franchise tag but given it's 1-year only it's well worth putting him on it. A 4 year deal likely has 2 years and about 24m guaranteed.

Around 8 mil/season. That's about what he's worth.

4 mil is backup money, Coogledukes.
Question is do you consider Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith comparables? If so Schultz could get 11-13m a year

His agent won't allow that, nor would he. If he regains his collegiate blocking prowess then maybe he will be worth his demands. I'm not saying he was a phenomenal blocker coming out of Stanford, but he was a better blocker than pass catcher. This leads me to believe it's about effort and coaching, although that's pretty standard for blocking.

Probably around 4 years $50 million.
Personally, and I love Dalton, I think that's too high. I see the Franchise Tag as a way of extending negotiations or a 1 year rental and then replace him. I'll be shocked if the Cowboys want the tag amount to be his yearly average.
If I want to keep him, I'd offer him 4 years at 35, a reasonable signing bonus, and guarantee 20 million of it. Otherwise, I'd let him play on the tag this year and then replace him.

Unless, of course, he has another great year and makes the pro bowl.....lol.

The franchise tag is the average of the top 5 at the position. I'm a Schultz fan, but he's not top 5.

I find it strange how people suddenly believe so strongly in this next man up BS.

NFL players get paid according to how good they are. It's a fan thing that the next man up just gets more, except of course at QB. The other positions are not like that at all.

Shultz actually has chance at being a 90+ catch player this season. With Gallup injured Dak will probably be throwing the football to Shultz more then anyone. He will at least earn his tag money this season.
Sure, but I'd like to know how many of those 90 catches McKeon couldn't make....nevermind at 1/20th of the cost. Maybe we could have added a better pass rusher or MLB for the difference.

Most of them are dump offs, not Schultz' unique ability to find his way open.

He also better hope DCs don't pay him more mind now that Cooper is gone.

My overall problem is that if you really want to fix your run game, Schultz ain't your guy, let alone at a premium price.

Wait....want to still be a passing team? Then find a way to keep Cooper.

Those two moves didn't work in conjunction for my taste, as it begs the question.....what exactly IS the plan?

Then it leads to that awkward moment in your head when you need to reconcile that there isn't one.

About 25. I think you're underrating Schultz's get open ability. That's OK, same thing happened to Witten, who was the best chain moving TE of all time.

As much as I like Schultz as a player, overpaying him is a mistake. He's a 6-8 mil/season player.

Could be, but I wouldn't pay him based on a guy who was foolishly overpaid. I'd pay him w/i reason.
Except that guy and hunter henry are the ones that helped set the market for the TEs below the top ones in the NFL.
