Reality check on Trey Lance beating Day Prescott or even Cooper Rush

I think most of us are realistic about this young man's chances, but for those who are beating the drums that our #1 and #2 are in trouble it doesn't look good that the press is already saying Trey Lance looks inconsistent. No pads, no sacks, and the same offense he learned last year. I don't know what else he needs.

There has never been a successful QB project under Jerry Jones. Only 3 QBs have been successful as starters - Troy Aikman, Dak Prescott and Tony Romo. Troy was a gimme, the #1 overall pick and even Tom Landry admitted he would have drafted Troy if he had stayed on as coach. Tony Romo was Sean Payton's baby, and to stress the point even further that Jerry is horrible at spotting talent, Romo would have been cut if Quincy Carter hadn't failed his drug test. And then Dan Prescott who Jerry definitely didn't want because he tried his darnedest to draft another failed QB in Paxton Lynch. And the Cowboys lucked into Dak as a 13-3 rookie starter, that wasn't by choice. So who does Jerry get credit for? Names like Drew Henson, Chad Hutchinson and Quincy Carter. Winners. And this same GM was the first person the 49ers called because they know how much he drools over project QBs even though he couldn't pick the right one in an open field.

But we also saw Trey Lance play for the 49ers. He was lost, completely lost. This was the 49ers. This was not Steve Young who looked horrible on the worst franchise in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Bucks. Or even Jim Plunkett failing with the then horrible New England Patriots and winning Super Bowls as the franchise QB for the Raiders years later. This is the 49ers, who have maybe the best offensive minded head coach in the NFL, and are one of the most dominant teams in the NFL the last few years even if they don't have a SB win.

Anything is possible. But if I had to put money on Trey Lance becoming a franchise QB, I would definitely go the other direction. Which is sad, because I do think there's a good chance that Dan has played his last year here, and the Cowboys have no viable replacement. We are far from the Ron Wolf GM, or Green Bay Packers, who have the next great QB always lined up.
Who's Dan????????? LOL!!!

That’s my thing…has this guy really had a great chance to prove he could or couldn’t play? He was the starter and got hurt, no? Then Purdy played great and they moved on
Those lauding the 49ers for “admitting” their mistake and cutting bait aren’t thinking it through.

The 49ers’ were in the same situation as the Chiefs were when they drafted Mahomes. The Chiefs had an experienced incumbent that had hit his ceiling (Smith) -the same as the 49ers with Garrapolo. Both teams drafted a potential replacement high with the plan to sit and learn for a year behind the incumbent.

Trey was named the starter in year 2, but was lost for year after 2 weeks. When the incumbent was then subsequently lost for the year, in comes Mr. Irrelevant and they realize they’ve blind squirrel stumbled on their QB of the future (just like Dallas in 2016).

At that point, the 49ers have a SB caliber team and need and an experienced, cost effective backup so their season doesn’t go down the drain if their QB goes down for the year. They made the decision that Lance didn’t fit either of those requirements (especially the cost side given his draft status). That’s totally different than “giving up” on him because he’s “trash”.

The Cowboys are in somewhat the same situation as the 49ers were in 2021. They have an incumbent that certainly has questions about having hit the ceiling. And they have a potential QB of the future. The difference vs. the 49ers at that time is the Cowboys only have 1 year to ascertain whether Lance can be the future because of he’s in the last year of his rookie deal.

Trey isn’t there to be a backup.

We can find backup QBs any day.

We already have one in Rush.

We need a QB1.
Trey is no threat to Dak in 2024 and Trey is a free agent beyond that. Trey has no other option but to be a backup in 2024. We don't need a QB1, we have Dak. I understand what you are saying. To that, I say something has to give. Either Dak gets his extension and Lance is let go or Dak is let go and Trey gets the extension. Trey can serve himself well by having an amazing preseason showing. But even that won't earn him the QB1 job in 2024, that job is securely Dak's as long as he can answer the bell.
