I'm an 80's kid, but my first introduction to music didn't consist of Madonna or Boy George.....it was listening to my pop's reel to reel.

I love music from the 50's. I can't stand 95% of today's RB, but R&B from the 50's was freaking awesome. Ray Charles, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, and Carl Lee Perkins.....early mainstream Rock n Roll still beats most of what gets put out today.

I still listen to rockabilly often. I love delta blues....I don't know much about it, but every time I hear it, I'm consumed. I even have a soft spot for some early surf music....be honest, when was the last time you heard harmonies like the Beach Boys used to lay out?

In the song, the narrator tells his lover she is free to mingle and socialize throughout the evening, but to make sure to save him one dance at the end of the night. The song is likely based on the personal experience of songwriter Doc Pomus, who had polio and used crutches to get around and could not dance. His wife, however, was a Broadway actress and dancer. The song gives his perspective of plaintively telling his wife to have fun dancing, but reminds her who will be taking her home and "in whose arms you're gonna be."

Geez, Brain .. maybe it would be better if you listed the songs from 50+ years ago you did NOT like :D :D

Janis will always be one of my favorites.

Janis is the sexiest ugly girl I've ever known. I could listen to that all day.

Don't forget Roy Orbison.

He would have been "the man" if Elvis hadn't come along.

My brother is 5 yrs older than me, and he listened to the radio each night while we laid in bed. ('Night Flight' out of Chicago)

So I have been listening to music ever since. I was probably 4 when he started listening to that at night.

I have loved listening to about all of the songs in this thread.

I never much made it out of the 70's though. I still listen to Kansas, Queen, Styx, Kiss, Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Outlaws, Grand Funk, ZZ Top, ... http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_artists70s.html

I think it was an age of music we will never see the likes of again. Greater musicians than most of them today though the technology today is amazing.

I'm getting offended by some of the music being labled as "really old" on here.

Was most of this played during your Junior Prom? :p:

"I'm pretty sure it's "ma cher amio", which is kind of loose Cajun French for "my dear love" Redundantly Williams uses the word "my" before the French "ma".

Hank was referring to the woman in the song. He was saying that he was going see his dear love. Though similar to the Parisian cher ami meaning dear friend, to a Cajun sha is friend and cher is love. So the translation is cher amio meaning dear love.
