Receive or Defer Tonight?

Honestly I dont think it matters. Ideally it would be great to receive, run clock, score and make a statement. However, if we do so we really do put a lot of pressure on the offense to come out firing on all cylinders. Worst case scenario is go 3 and out and have the Saints score plus get the ball the second half.

Which is why I bet Garrett plays it conservatively to avoid that and defers. Either way I wont dog him for his decision. I will however punk him out for some other questionable move during the game.

Say Dallas wins the toss .Do you let NO score 7 first or give yourself a chance to take the lead from jump?

Defer. I'd rather take the chance of them scoring 7 on the opening drive and then having more than 50 minutes to make that up than run the risk of them scoring just before half and then again on the opening drive of the 2nd half. It would be nigh on to impossible to make up a 2 score deficit in 25 minutes of game time.

I don't know why they even flip a coin to start the game. The visiting team should always get the choice. With 8 home and 8 away games, it would even out. Cut the formality and play the game.

I'm a old fart and a traditionalist, but I really like that idea. Along the same vein, why not give the receiving team on any kickoff the right to take the ball at the 25 or 30 without a kick or make the opponent kick.

Always defer, unless the weather is atrocious and then you might want to pick direction for the fourth quarter.

If you're conceding NO will score on every possession, you might as well give up and get it over with.

As long as we are pondering this, are we rooting for the Saints to choose heads or tails?

Defer, last thing we need to do on a neutral field is start off with a 3 and out.

Weird I was thinking to receive first to let our offense go out there and score first and that gets the crowd going and momentum in our favor but we would need a TD

Defer, defer, defer. What person said before, most of us had figured this out playing Madden as a kid. Always hated that Garrett never did. Almost lost my shi! when he deferred earlier this year. I couldn't believe he started doing it. I thought maybe he was still in the locker room at the coin toss.
I wonder who gave him the idea.

I want the ball to start the second half. It takes away any chance for them to get the last possession of the first AND the first possession of the second.

If they open the game with a TD that gives you 30 more minutes to answer than if they open the second half with a TD.

That's pretty much why I would always defer.
Also field position can be critical on that first possession.
if dallas takes the ball and goes 3 and out NO will start at the 40 and you dont want that.
And it is possible we make them go 3 and out and we get the ball at the 40.
plus what you said. better to defer.

only if you have a really good offense do you take the ball.
HOwever we may not win the toss, lol so that may be out of our hands.

They should elect to kick if they win the toss..
This would be the worst possible thing they could do. Why would you want to give the Saints the ball to start the game AND to open the second half? If you use your choice and choose to kick, they still get the choice to open the second half and would obviously elect to receive.

You do not elect to kick. You defer, and make them burn their choice by taking the ball, and giving you the choice in the second half.

They seemed to have deferred lately. I like that.

I can see the point of taking the ball, and scoring forst, but only if that is a TD. Get up on them and make them play from behind. Which we seem not to do.

However, in this game it will only work if we then stop them and get up 2 scores. As we can’t keep up in a shoot out.
So in this game, stay with the defer, stop them on D, set that time, score, then stop them again. Get up 2 scores, Amd still get the ball in the 2nd half.

And actually, in this case you'd still defer but might end up kicking both halves.

When you win the toss (or get the deferral in the second half), you have a choice of either who gets to kick, or what hotel you will defend

You can bet if the Saints win the toss THEY will defer!!!!!! And Cowboys will go 3 and out and NO's hurricane special will go to work......."Dak's all folks!!!!"

I agree with your post, definitely defer.

Defer

I hate to see this offense go 3 and out to start

Let’s defer. I want to see if we have a top 10 defense or a defense protected by ball control. Let’s see what the Hot Boys can do against a top offense.

You take the ball first and hope you can put together a long sustaining drive that ends up with a touchdown. Setting the tone for the game.

Worry about the 2nd half in the 2nd half. With this opponent the game may be over by then.
