Part of me wonders if we would have taken Nolan Smith if we had just picked up Ashawn Robinson in FA.

Yes, but some positions also carry higher value. Teams are much more likely to draft DEs early than TEs even of comparable value, so the DEs are generally going to be rated higher than the TEs., especially in a heavier class.

I don't agree with you that positional value/depth of class doesn't affect overall value.
100% agree. That’s why I always said heading into this thing if we have an Edge player graded similarly to someone like Mayer take the Edge player 10 times out of 10.

But on the consensus boards it’s more so just flat out rankings. Ex Michael Mayer was ranked ahead of like 6 guys that were drafted higher and all of them were premium positions.

Every single year the end of year redraft looks nothing like the so-called consensus. So why does the consensus matter?

Cowboys draft below with consensus big board rankings in parenthesis.

1. Smith (35)
2. Schoon (101)
3. Overshown (105)
4. Fehoko (184)
5. Richards (209)
6. Scott Jr (N/A)
6. Vaughn (142)
7. Brooks (N/A)

Here’s how I would’ve taken a stab at it leaning more BPA while keeping needs considered.

1. Nolan Smith - LB (16)
2. Ocyrus Torrence - G (32)
3. Adetomiwa Adebawore - DL (43)
4. Tyler Scott - WR (78)
5. JL Skinner - S (92)
6. Duece Vaughn - RB (142)
7. Brayden Willis - TE (257)
I'll take your draft over theirs.

Probably not fair to only do it after a rookie season…but on PFNs end of year redraft for 2022 they still had 24 of the 32 players from the consensus 1st rounders in their draft.

It’s certainly not the end all be all but cool tool IMO.

Yea, I like Mazi and thought it was an ok pick. They saw a good match for a need and took their guy. I just feel like Nolan was as big a blinking light as Lamb was when he slid at you can’t pass that guy up.

If Fehoko moves to DT maybe he’ll be ok. He just doesn’t check the athleticism box to be a solid pro at DE.
You don’t believe Fehoko can play end on run downs and potentially slip inside on passing downs?

Yup. He had a pretty low snap count as a rookie but also could be part of the reason they let they Bates walk…if he hits and they now have a good safety on a rookie deal I think that’s probably better roster construction than a massive contract.

I think he can be a solid edge defender against the run but offers very little as a pass rusher outside.

Could he be good inside? Maybe…but rolling the dice and taking that risk in the 4th is way too early for me.

Yea wasn’t a position I felt we need to spend Capitol on, but hoping he surprises at this point. Seems he can be a solid edge run defender and hoping he can contribute inside on 3rd. Seems he has a high motor.

I bet the probably would have gone OL, it didn't sound like the debate was between Mazi and Smith.

Yep. Jane Slater just said on the NFL Network that LaPorta was their highest rated TE, so Buffalo didn’t come “steal” Kincaid from the Cowboys. They would have taken LaPorta over Kincaid if they went TE.

She said it came down to Mazi Smith, OL Bergeron, or LaPorta. They went with Mazi because the team has been needing a rock in the middle and have been wanting it since last year.

Terrible.

My question when it comes to the guards is was he 50 slots higher because it was a weak guard class or because he was perceived to be 50 slots better.
There is game film of Torrence going up against the best player in the draft. He would have played 100% of offensive snaps.

If there are mitigating factors such as health concerns, fine.

But even if Schoon is a very good TE, its doubtful he matches the contribution. He will need to be a mismatch nightmare.

The (GOAT) Brugler had haskins ranked 15th on his board. I bet there were teams that didn't even have a 1st round grade on him but we should listen to consensus boards. Smh

That’s a nice cherry you’ve picked there!
