But I don't think Jerry is going to bring in Reeves and then not listen to him.

Since the end of the season Jerry has looked like a guy who knows that he needs to do *something*, but doesn't know what to do.

Reeves will help Jerry with the what and the how.

That's a good thing.
I sure as heck hope Jerry does do the right thing. If it's stepping back, then do it. He should do it for at least one year to see what happens.

If things go wrong, he has plenty of folks to blame and maybe less stress will mean he won't have to go back for another facelift for another couple of years.

REEVES TO DALLAS LOOKS TO BE A DONE DEAL

One of the great things about Radio Row is that the room attracts plenty of people who have access to plenty of NFL rumors.

And though this one isn’t much of a shock, we’ve heard enough to conclude that Dan Reeves will very soon be joining the Dallas Cowboys as a Bill Parcells or Floyd Reese-style consultant.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN first reported the possible move earlier this week.
It doesn’t mean that the Cowboys will fire coach Wade Phillips, especially since Phillips and Reeves have worked together extensively in the past.
It also doesn’t mean that owner Jerry Jones will listen to anything that Reeves has to say, if it conflicts in any way with that which Jones already wants to hear.

This is such a nothing deal. Old man Dan just wants a paycheck and to "consult" when he's not too tired.

Wade and his assistants and Jerra won't be taking any advice from that old fart.
What a publicity stunt by Jerra.

I agree. I'm not too keen on a 66-year-old who has been away from the game being a coordinator -- like the 49ers were seemingly interested in -- but I do think he can provide some tremendous and tutelage as a consultant.

But like you, my question concerns what his true role will be. How much clout will his opinions be given? If he wants T.O. gone, will it happen? Or will Jerry, as Florio suggests, just do as Reeves said when it mirrors his own beliefs?

Solid move, I just hope we give him the power to actually be influential on some level.

I'm more optimistic about this move than some.

It will now be:

Stephen Jones
Wade Phillips
Jason Garrett
Tom Ciskowski
Dan Reeves

VS

Jerry Jones

Despite what some write, Jerry Jones has shown that he will defer to the organization when he is isolated and be a team player. He will make his case strong but defer.

ex. not trading up for that WR from Indiana
not giving Terry Glenn one more year, per Vela

The Cowboys are the laughing stock of the NFL with all that talent. That isn't good for business or Jerry World. I believe some big changes are in store. You can't stay pat with this roster and expect to win.

Also, I think this draft could pretty much gut the bottom of the roster, and it needs to go.

The no speaking thing has been great. But I like the Dan Reeves hire. He's the football guy they need around the ranch. Now if Jerry could just let his ego go and make him GM . . .

I am thinking Reeves will be a "ghost GM".

Jerry gets to save face without having to "officially" hire a GM and stepping down himself.

I hope this isn't why Dan Reeves is being brought here.

I hope he is being brought here because Jerry Jones really wants the opinion of somone he respects regarding Free Agency, the Draft and how to field a "team".

If he is here to spy on and/or babysit Jason Garrett while Wade Phillips is running the defense, not only will I pass, but this will just add to the weird Circus-type Atmosphere.

I wonder if this is just another guy the players have to start choosing sides with? Wade Phillips is the Head Coach but most felt Jason Garrett was the Head Coach in Waiting but alot of his luster wore off this past season. Wade Phillips is heading into the last year of his contract, with no hint of an extension and now Dan Reeves arrives at Valley Ranch. Some player may think he could be the Head Coach in 2010 and this could undermine the authority of guys like Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett.

At some point, you just have to tell the players to shut the hell up and let them know that their personal play may undermine their position on the team!!!

You tell the players that blocking your guy or catching the ball or actually tackling somebody does not depend on who you think the HC is going to be in 2010.

You tell the players to do their dam job and shut the hell up about anything else. If they have a problem with that, then it is time to start making an example out of a couple of guys.

I disagree, why would Reeves turn down an OC job to take a figure head role with no real duties or authority???

Doesnt make sense.

There are also reports that Reeves has been trying to get back into the league, putting out feelers and such. You dont do this if you just want a paycheck and dont want to really work at anything.

Also, while he may be an "old fart", he is one of the smartest football guys on the planet. He has forgotten more about football than anybody on this board will ever know. He is universally respected around the league and would bring some "instant credibility" to the organization.

It's impressive the lengths Jerry is going just to keep Wade and the status quo and at the same time make many think he's actually changing and doing something different.

I'll hold off on celebrating this hire until they clarify what his role will be within the organization. We'll see if having a so-called "football guy" in JJ's ear changes the status quo around the Ranch...

While I like Dan Reeves and I think this could be a positive.

I really have to laugh at the overwhelming "yes, its a positive" move responses.

Dan is a football person and he will connect and get through to a few players hopefully.

Jessica is not a football person, she is a distraction, she is a celebrity(Romo is small town) and is most closely connected to the most important player on the team.

Before you get this post twisted. Its not about Reeves or Jessica. Its about how people around you affect you. Psych!

If Jerry gives him the power to law down the law, then Jessica shouldn't matter unless Romo believes he is untouchable. If that is the case, then nothing will prevent Romo trashing his career.

Even at that, he is good with players.

why would that change? They just built the little area for jerry to entertain his corporate stooges. I cant imagine jerry changing at all personally.

If anything he will probably do more of his own thing. That is his m.o. when it goes bad, jerry makes irrational decisions and forces issues.

Wade phillips was walking around the practice field the week after the cincy game with his hat on backwards, his shorts pulled down and strolling like a pimp, the look on the players faces said it all.

the circus isnt going anywhere, they are just rearranging the lineup of the circus currently.

Hopefully reeves could clean some of this up, but if like you said he is here to babysit garrett, that will just add more to it. Nobody wants a consultant hanging over his head. Garrett would prefer to be fired I would imagine before having a babysit to run things by.

If this is how Garrett is going to react, then he really needs an attitude adjustment. He will need to learn to accept constructive criticism, if Reeves will be his unofficial mentor.

If I was an offensive coordinator and management felt the need to bring in one of the best minds in the game to steer me along, I would certainly take advantage and soak up as much information as I could from him to make me even better. Its the same as bringing in Deion Sanders to give advice to the cornerbacks IMO.

I don't think Landry ever made a Super Bowl without Reeves, did he?
Nope, 2 as a player (V & VI), three as an Assistant Coach (X, XII, & XIII).

Reeves took Denver to three Super Bowls (XXI, XXII, & XXIV) and Atlanta to one (XXXIII).

9 times he has been a part of the big game.

I'm sure he will have some input, but our scouts have been doing an excellent job and there's no reason to de-emphasize their role.

I dont think Reeves is being brought here because of perceived talent issues, he's being brought here because of poor coaching/lack of discipline issues.

Which penetrates down to the draft level. You either spot a player whom can be coached and will react in kind to tough discipline, or you draft one of the various varieties of punks coming out of the draft in cloves these days.

Every player of "issue" today, came from the draft at one point for someone.

So here's hoping Reeves will beable to spot and stop a dud if one were to come up that nobody else here could see. Bottom line is, everybody can do better in the draft and we are still far from doing the best we can- just as most.

I respect Reeves greatly, but I'm not sure how this helps the lockerroom situation unless Reeves is the HC.
