I think they like Hurns and signing cooper has nothing to do with HurnsWhy would they have picked up Hurns option to keep him, only to release him to take a cap hit to supposedly save cap money. If they had no plans for him, they would have just let him go then.
And as posted above, I did see something a few months ago, they thought the team would approach Hurns to extend his deal by a year. May have been a reporters speculation though.
Hurns is still a good player in spite of what the internet GM ‘s say on here.
Here is a great rule of thumb....they are internet GM’s for a reason...

You can always roll over cap space to the next year. So to give anybody a frontladden deal is essentially meaningless.
It is paying Dead Money in the first year instead of after the last year ...... bass ackwardsYou can always roll over cap space to the next year. So to give anybody a frontladden deal is essentially meaningless.
We were never in Cap HellIt was this kind of thinking that kept the front office in cap hell for many years.
Paying more up front gives front offices flexibility later in contract years in the event a player has declined and needs to be released.
Nothing worse than having to let a declining veteran or unable to stay healthy veteran go and be forced to pay said player for two years after retirement (example Tony Romo).
Another reason why I am completely against restructures of contracts. You free up cap space for that year but push it down to the next cap year hit and it hits twice as hard.
We were never in Cap Hell
Everything you say is the wrong way to look at things
Paying Dead Money in the first year is stupid and the player will feel underpaid in the later years... they never remember the past bonuses
If you frontload a contract the team will have 3 years of cheap base salaries and no guaranteed money leftPlayers receive a majority of their guaranteed money at signing. So not sure how you can make your argument that players feel underpaid later on.
I'm specifically talking about cap hits.
I believe they can cut him at any time before the season starts so there was no reason not to pick up his option. If we get some unfortunate injuries in training camp it might be good to have him around.
Cutting Hurns would free up $5 million in cap space and would allow for some additional cap space for extending Cooper.
Give Cooper a larger cap hit this year in order to lower his cap hit for the next 4-5 years.
We saw what he did for this team last year.
He's worth it.
Get a deal done asap.
Dallas never markets talent like that. And he has a contract in place. Nobody is trading for that.Roster spots right now are like beers at the beginning of a frat party. They are seem limitless, so there's no crunch there.
His impact on the cap isn't that important right now. It becomes more important once the season starts. He's also insurance should there be a rash of injuries. There's nothing preventing a renegotiation at the 11th hour. He's basically a refundable deposit on a beach trip that you might not take, and you'll likely have the house owner desperate come August when they don't have anyone to rent to at the last minute.
And who knows, maybe he shows something in the preseason to prove he's healthy and another team that's short on the position due to injuries or a crap draft class decides to throw a 7th your way.

They have 0 reason to cut hurns today.

Bingo!!!! this also why I think he's a 53 player keeper
You can structure it to take the hit whenever. Most deals are structured to get relief now and pay later due to higher cap raises. But if we can afford to take a big hit now it makes sense rather than having extra cap for nothing. They have 0 reason to cut hurns today. Extending Cooper likely reduces his cap impact this year anyway so hurns's deal does not affect that regardless.
That method did not work for the Vikes when they reigned AP. As soon as AP got all his guaranteed $$$ and his cap hi was peanuts he wanted more guaranteed $$$ or he was going to hold out!I have a different view on the outlook of the salary cap than you do.
I see it more beneficial for the future to give star players large cap hits earlier in their contract rather than later.
This way we can afford to keep new talent in the later years while still keeping big name talent on the roster.
Pay Cooper off early rather than later.
Seems to be a better strategy in staying out of cap hell.
