Last night, I was debating a Steeler fan about who had a better year between Romo and Roethlisberger. The debate started when I brought up the two games in which Romo was clearly not healthy (SF and Thanksgiving Day vs PHI). This got me thinking, "If I remove the worst two games from the top QBs and pro-rate them over 16 games, how would their stats look?" Well, take a look:

Worst-Two-Games.jpg

A 71.4% completion percentage and a passer rating of 123.5. That is insane.

Good stuff!
He was hurt in the Washington game as well.

Still, I do think Roethlisberger deserves more kudos than he's been getting for last year's performance. You barley hear about it, but it was his best year ever.

Romo and Rodgers were just better, that's all. :)

I suspect Big Ben will have some crazy stats this year. Few teams have the weapons that they have. Green Bay, and that may be it.

Having those 2 big games really distorts the overall view of his season.

I'd be interested to see what each of those QBs worst games are. You could say that since Russel Wilson only moved by 4.7 points, for instance, that he is more consistent. Maybe he worst games didn't necessarily contribute to losses, whereas Romo's did.

(This is a sample argument btw, I don't really believe that so chill out those of you who want to go crazy).

Russell Wilson is a good, solid quarterback. He can win you a game, but he rarely will lose you a game (Super Bowl notwithstanding).

Look at that Rodgers 42 and 2 number. Man, that guy is good.

Really interesting analysis. Thanks for posting.

Removing that 1st game in San Fran where Romo hadn't had much pre-season practice as well as the Philly game where he was coming back from injury makes a BIG difference. What a year he had.

Excellent work. This is a great example of how a blogger article can provide great information. Any wanna be bloggers should study your work.

I don't know what to conclude from this in general, but it is very informative relative to Romo in 2014 because of his back injury issues.

I don't care that Wilson is consistent because both his 16 game and 14 Passer Rating is far below Romo's.

The statistics make a fun and slightly theoretical case that had Romo been completely healthy for those two games, he would have made a run at the best single season in NFL history from a QB rating perspective. I believe the record is 122 (Rodgers, 2011).

Very interesting.

Remove big Bens two monstrous games and his numbers look far less impressive ...

He had a great year though ...no doubt...

I'm thinking Romo has too many TDs in your graphic. I thought he had 34 last year.

He's great.
Those two ints are not real, btw...he had 5. Still an hilariously small number to go with 38TDs
Neon removed the two worst games and then projected the revised average over 16 games.

Oh, I know. That's what the the thread was about. I just though Romo was going to run away with the league rating if you took out those two really bad games where his back was at issue, and then I looked and saw that Rodgers INTs were still a lot lower after the adjustment. He just takes care of the football.

I think Wilson in a heavy run offense can win you games because he makes few mistakes. However I think if he was in a predominately passing offense he may not fair near as well. Right now teams know if they can keep him in the pocket and not allow him out on the edge his passing abilities are not great. With his ability to run he puts a lot of pressure on defense once he is outside, if you hang with the WR he will run for some big yards, if you come up on him he will make the throw.

He throws an accurate ball and has a great arm. I think they just simply haven't asked him to be in a pass-first offense.
