Report: Commanders want Peppers

Posted by Mike Florio on March 1, 2010 11:17 AM ET

The sentiment that defensive end Julius Peppers will be paid more like Dwight Freeney, Jared Allen, and DeMarcus Ware and less like Albert Haynesworth omits the possibility that the same team that gave Haynesworth $40 million guaranteed might decide to take full advantage of the rules of the uncapped year by chasing Peppers, too.

Jason Reid of the Washington Post reports that the Commanders "are expected to pursue" Peppers, which means that he'll likely be signed by daybreak on Friday.

Similar rumors -- though much more rampant -- emerged last year regarding Haynesworth and the Commanders. At one point, our pal Lance Zierlein of KGOW in Houston reported that it would definitely occur. And occur it did; a $100 million deal was negotiated between midnight and 5:30 a.m. on the first morning of free agency.

If/when the Commanders land Peppers and switch to a 3-4 defense, the eight-year veteran would move to outside linebacker for the first time in his career. As Reid points out, the key player in all of this will be the aforementioned Haynesworth, who might be expected to man the line-clogging nose tackle position -- and thus yield the glory to Peppers.

So on the ten-year anniversary of the greatest collection of highly-paid individual players who couldn't function as a team, it's fitting that the man who wrote the checks for the 2000 Commanders could be getting ready to do it all over again.

I don't get why the Commanders keep forking over money to Defensive players while its the offense that needs major work?

Uncapped so I wouldn't be surprised if Snyder goes ape**** with his checkbook.

Peppers wants to play 3-4 OLB anyways, he's made that abundantly clear.

That's all I needed to read...I'll believe it when I see it. And if I do see it, I'll wait until the season to judge it.

It was not something Florio just dug out of his backside.

It was reported from the Washington Post.

The Commanders moving to the 3-4 is going to be one of the greatest blunders ever.

They just overpaid, greatly, for lazy Haynesworth last year who pisses and moans with the duties he had in the running game in a 4-3 and now they want him to play 3-4 NT or DE where he's going to have EVEN MORE run responsibility?

yeah that's going to work out wonderful for them.

We'll see...I do like the idea of Orakpo playing the Rush-LB.

And on top of that, Blache was a terrible DC. I am not 100% sold on Haslett...but Blache was terrible.

Add to that Dallas had a very good defense in 2004 and 2005 -- and a 4-3 Defensive Coordinator. They switched and it worked out fairly well...

I just love how fans label a potential move, before anything happens on the field, as a complete failure...

Unless Orakpo or Peppers is the next D-Ware it's not going to be nearly as smooth a transition.

Orakpo is a pretty darn good player, I believe, but he's not going to be as good as Ware I don't believe.

And Dallas didn't have the situation with Haynesworth to deal with either in their move. They didn't have a fat, over paid, lazy D-Lineman who made it perfectly clear that he didn't even like the amount of run responsibility he had in a 4-3. Now what do you think he's going to do in a 3-4 where he's going to rush the passer even less? You think he's going to be super happy about it?

No. He's going to sulk and in doing so he's going to hurt the defense and it's move to that formation cause he's going to act like a baby about it and they're going to have a bunch of money tied up into a baby who doesn't want to deal with run responsibility.

It's a bad move given the guys they've got currently. Now maybe they'll draft a super great class of of people for their defense and it will work out amazing. The problem is that while they're doing that they'll be neglecting the other things they need to upgrade even more than their defense and that's their QB situation and more importantly than any of it their O-Line.

It won't matter what their D is upgraded to, or how well it does, as long as they continue to have an offense that a high school team could shut down.

That argument was all over the map.

Lets start with Orakpo- he is a good player, you believe, but won't be a good player like Ware, you believe.

Hard to judge a guy after thier rookie season. In December 2005, Chris Cooley was beating Ware for TDs in a 35-7 thrashing at FedEx. I think Ware turned out ok, I believe.

The Haynesworth argument- Remains up in the air, there seem to be lots of assumptions about what Haslett will do with him. In the only substantial interview Haslett has had, he spoke of moving AH around (NT, 3-4 DE, even LB!!) Shanahan talked about playing a whole bunch of 4-3 fronts.

This isn't going to be your 1986 Giants 3-4

The last part of your argument is basically saying "well, even if they fix the D the O will suck," which of course we have no clue what the talent on the O will be next year, or in 2011, or 2012.

The Commanders aren't winning the Superbowl in 2010 or 2011. The goal is going to be not to horribly suck and embarras the franchise those 2 years and prepare to compete in 2012 :)
