Of course we're going to be serious about drafting a QB. We scare the hell out of teams who really want one, cut a deal, move back, draft Elliott and snag Paxton Lynch with the extra pick we get.

The draft is so easy.

I feel Romo has some time left, how much? really hard to say. He is 36 and even starting this past season he does not practice on Wed because of the concerns of the back, that too me is not a sign of a guy who will be playing 4 or 5 years from now. My hope is Tony has 2 great years left in him and we can get a young QB ready to step in when the time comes but I just would hate to see the Cowboys put themselves in a position of scrambling for what is the hardest position in football to replace.

Fair, and understood as well...

So because Jerry said that Romo will start for several years, that leads one to conclude that we are not taking a QB at 4. But apparently we will take a RB at 4 even though Jerry also clearly said they will not put a lot of money into the RB position. Taking Elliott at 4 would mean we'd have to give him $24MM in guaranteed money.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Jerry stands pat at running back, but I think Elliot will make the team better. It would surprise me if he takes a QB, given his history of drafting quarterbacks, along with him telling us we already have a starter set for years and we only need a backup.

Jerry has already said he plans on Romo starting for several years, so I just don't think he'll take a QB at #4. To me it seems far more likely he'll opt for a power running game like we had with Murray and draft Elliot. Maybe he'll take a QB with a later pick, but I can't help but wonder if Kellen Moore throwing for over 400 yards has him thinking he may already have his #2 QB.

that's just it this is about the future of the cowboy organization - we are not looking for number 2 QB - we are looking to the future

(chuckling to self) ...but just in case, the team has done a lot of study on the position and should be well prepared for following through on a direction, come the draft.

yea - i know i'm being "anal" to a degree. but this "slide" in journalism where they make up stuff based on their own "feelings" about the matter. that's simply not news and in no way can it be claimed as accurate. if jones came out and said it - great. if you can get a quote from ANYONE on the cowboys staff to say it's being strongly considered - great.

point proven and news has been reported.

but do we have ANY of that? we have pieces but given people put pieces together in their own manner, we can't say we KNOW where they are going. i'm old school here and think that journalism should report facts. otherwise you're a blog and of no more use to put in here than our own opinions and speculation. saying someone else THINKS what you think doesn't make it news or accurate, just an agreement.

I will not argue over today journalism you are correct but I will say I have not seen the Cowboys pay this much attention to QB in past drafts. When Dallas took Claiborne at 6 it was not like the Cowboys were bring in top QB's. I think everyone knew Romo still had a lot more time and getting a vet backup was going to be the plan. This time around Cowboys have been very active in working out QB's and I just don't think it is by accident or some smoke screen.

If that would happen I would be thrilled, I don't think it will. I think there are other teams who need QB and will move up to get one if need be.

You aren't the only fan who takes his walk with Sportsmanship up front...you are appreciated, my friend. Hopefully, the Cowboys get a strong candidate to learn while on the pine.

Myself, I'm tired of a lame approach of Tony Romo on his death bed. He has plenty of game and plenty of ability still to put on the carpet. To me, that trumps all partial truths and crying in some of these fan's beer. First truth, the Cowboys don't owe me a thing as a fan. Fact, they still provide me with a wealth of enjoyment, whether or not I raise a pinkie finger when I drink my beer.

It's good to see a true blue fan as yourself...QB or not.

It's called reality at this point. And that reality is we have a QB who is 36, coming off two broken collarbones and has had surgery in the recent past to fix a balky back that he and the team have to nurse throughout the year with a modified practice schedule.

He very well may be healthy for the next 3 years but if this organization was smart and forward thinking, understands the value of smart contingency planning and realizes they are likely to not have a Top 5 pick for some time, taking a QB at 4 should very much be on the table, regardless of what they think of Romo.

They can't "wish" Romo to remain healthy for 4 more years.

Why do reporters in these articles always claim to know which QB is sitting on top of a board, when they obviously do not? Does anybody out there fall for that stuff?
Judging by some groups in social media I'm in, there are quite a few who do.

and you can't WISH speculation into news.

well i guess you can.

again - not arguing the need for a qb, the era of romo ending or any of the like. i'm only commenting that a journalist spouting off speculation as fact is ********.

I would take a QB with #4 and not look back because we're probably not going to have a chance like this again. I don't have much pull with the front office, though. :)

Don't sell yourself short...you have just as much pull as anyone else on this board! :)

It's just a weird thing to say. "Yeah, this billion dollar organization's best kept secret? I know what it is." Especially back when it's two full months before the board is even put together.

With the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys won't likely be in this position for quite some time.
With several star players returning from injury and a solid group of talent for years to come, the Cowboys should at least be a playoff contending team in the foreseeable future. Of course things can take a turn for the worst, like the 2015 season after going 4-12 in 2014, but that's not the expectation for America's Team. And if recent history has anything to say, the Cowboys can do no worse than go 8-8 in each of the next couple of seasons.
But before the Cowboys reach the end of this decade, the team will have a tough decision to make at the end of this month. Who will the 'Boys select with the fourth overall pick in the draft?
While Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones swore off the quarterback position last month with this upcoming top-5 pick in the draft, the team continued their evaluations of the position which included visiting with the draft's top quarterback prospects. Did Jones attempt to put up a smokescreen back in March?
Per Bleacher Report's Jason Cole, the Cowboys are serious about taking a quarterback with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft.

I will give the Cowboys credit in regards to people having no idea who they will take. Personally, if Ramsey is gone I think they are taking Bosa. But they are certainly putting up all the confusing smoke screens and rhetoric to confuse everyone.

it's just funny cause this "mindset" will spend the pick how THEY want it done and make up news, slants, visits - all to validate their "guess". the part that's even sadder is if they are wrong - they don't say "wow, we were wrong" they call jones wrong for not doing what they thought he would do.

Let me see. We have the number four pick in the NFL draft, the highest pick we've had in over 20 years. We have an opportunity to pick a player who can profoundly impact every game for the foreseeable future. We have a young solid offensive line young receivers with a ton of potential. The best possible pic would be a franchise QB, Jerry knows this.

Well..if bleacher feels that the Cowboys are taking a QB at #4, then we most certainly ARE NOT taking a QB at #4. Thanks for the kiss of death, you friggin' hacks. Connor Cook/Dak Prescott/Christian Hack-attack, come on down...

You dang right he does!

Take a QB at 4, take a RB or DE in the 2nd and so forth. Romo has two GOOD years left, after that, he's way below average. This QB can learn over the next two years. While he's learning, we can sneak in another offensive coordinator and hopefully another great coach to coach the new QB.
