Report: Pats took less to trade Milton to the Cowboys out of respect

I don't know if the Giants and Steelers will take a QB in the first. But Milton may be looking at it like Wilson will be the Giants' starter this year and Rodgers when signed will be the Steelers' starter. Here, Dak is the starter, but he's coming off an injury that could keep him off the field, and he's missed a lot of games in the last five seasons (playing just two full seasons).

Why compete in Pittsburgh with a starter they just signed (if they get Rodgers) and a probable early draft pick (as the primary backup/starter in waiting) when you can go to Dallas with a starter showing signs of breaking down and no primary backup? Same with New York.

Both Wilson and Rodgers are on their last legs, but if I was Milton, I would think those teams plan to draft an heir apparent. I wouldn't think Dallas is because of its commitment contractwise to Dak. I'd think I'd have a very good chance of stepping in if he suffers an injury setback.
I think some fans are forgetting he was a 6th round pick a year ago.....right now he's barely ready for a consistent backup. There is no way in hell he or his coaches will think about starting until he proves it on the field. Dallas QB situation is stable over the next two, BUT a lot of short-term and long-term issues can offer him a chance to seriously compete within the next couple of years

Right. At best, Dallas hopes he can build on what he showed and prove to be the heir to Dak. But if you asked the coaches if they expect him to compete with Dak for the starting job, they'd laugh in your face. This was just about getting a backup (which we were going to try to do in the draft anyway) with the potential to become more than that.

Is it too early to be calling for Milton to be the day 1 starter?

I wasn't exactly sure what the etiquette is on that sort of thing
Well the truth be told they would have honest competition and I might add especially at the qb position. Let the best players start after they have earned it in camp and or preseason. But Jerry lets little things like contract dictate the starter. Hope Joe can sit anyway to develop and get better. He looked the part in college just as did Will Grier. We wait and see I guess.

-I just find it interesting as fans we trash sending a 4th rounder for Trey Lance who 2 years earlier was a top 10 pick with 4 games experience.

-Fast forward 2 years later and we applaud sending a 5th rounder for a player that was a 6 rounder 1 year earlier because they played decent in 1 game?

Anyone else see the irony in our fan logic? I'm rooting for Joe and hope he does well here and the trade ends up being a steal for the Cowboys. However, I just find it comical how we evaluate certain moves.
Mainly because people didn't like what they saw from Lance. People didn't like giving up a 4th round pick for what they thought was a bad quarterback.

Milton is more of a wildcard. Wishful thinking is allowed. It also wasn't a 4th round pick.

:clap:As stated in another thread......they could have easily signed a veteran backup but they know with Daks, age, health and contract, now is the time to take a shot at developing a young guy behind him.

I like Milton’s upside for sure, but he is going to have to play at some point soon to develop and what if Prescott doesn’t get hurt? This isn’t Michael Penix.

Ah maybe that’s it….Jerry has bought himself a QB controversy unless Dak plays much better.

He gave up more for Lance, so….

Maybe the longer term plan is to talk Dak into accepting a trade.

I saw the other day that he wanted to go somewhere where he possibly had the chance to start, oh well welcome to Dallas!!!!!

I guess being a Cowboy still has appeal to it!!

First time in awhile I can remember it working to our advantage. I'll take it!

In some ways, this may be my favorite move of the offseason. Milton didn't cost us much and may fail, but we're not absolutely counting on him so it's worth the shot. With players like Elam and Taylor we also didn't give up much but we're counting on them to replace proven vet starters (Lewis and Kendricks).

But then why not go to PIT?
Because even if the Steelers sign Rodgers, they are likely to use a first-round or second-round pick on a future starter. He could have gone there and bet on them viewing him as the future starter, but I don't think anyone was promising him that. Here, he knows that we are contractually obligated to Dak and unlikely to draft an early-round QB at this point to be his eventual replacement.

Why contend with a first-round or second-round pick to be No. 2 or the future starter when you can come here where you know there isn't one?

My issue with the lance trade is they didn't let him get on the field. We should have let him play when dak went out at least a few games to see what we had

I know you think this is a smart take but it’s really not.

Dude has tools and he’s shown he can play.

We also have no backup.

Great trade.

Like it or not. The balance trade was good too. Even if it didn’t work out.

High risk high reward with late picks is good imo.
I don't take an issue with either trade, even though the Lance one didn't work out. Glad to take some later round swings and I hope Milton will work out better.

I'm just laughing that we were so critical of the Lance trade as if we were throwing away a day 1 pick vs a day 3 pick, then praising one for Milton. For the record I think the Milton trade is a fine gamble.

The thing is, Cowboys fans blame Dak because it is convenient.

But the fact is, he was three years old the last time this team even reached the NFC Championship Game. I can't lay three decades of failure at the feet of one player.
We are close to one decade of failure with him as the starting QB.
Please remind us, how old was he when he took on twitter and said his infamous #hadenough ? He was literally blaming the QB at the time, because... it was convenient?

Isn't this kinda like Joe Milton publicly disrespecting Dak Prescott by saying he is more certain his best future is in Dallas..? I mean, the Giants and Steelers HAVE NOT drafted their franchise quarterbacks. Whoever they pick is a complete unknown for both teams.

He has already decided he has zero chance of competing with question marks for those teams. Plus, Geno Smith has not been labeled as a 'dependable' starter until Seattle backed him. Yet, Milton does not wish to compete with a veteran quarterback, whom the Raiders are gambling on via a trade instead of through the draft?

I can understand about him avoiding Philadelphia and Jalen Hurts. No one is unseating a defending starting Super Bowl champion quarterback. Should he see Dallas actually being the easiest route to jumpstarting his career hopes?
Yes he should because its a fact
Dak is an above average regular season QB and at the bottom in the playoffs

Lance hardly played in college. The 49ers gave up the farm for him and bailed. But the Cowboys gave up a 4th round pick for him when no other team offered that much.

Milton played a lot more, was only a 6th round pick, and Dallas got him for a 5th and got a seventh back in the deal. And other teams outbid them but the Patriots settled for less out of respect for Milton, who wanted to be here.

Huge differences with these trades.
They're 2 different QBs, but speculation was other teams offered a 5th for Lance so yeah the Cowboys paid a little more than others. Typically the team that offers more gets the deal done, and we got lucky this time we didn't have to. Milton and Lance both only had 1 full starting season in college, while Milton got some more experience but spent a lot of time on the bench the 5 or so years he was in school.

Lance definitely had more film on him than Milton in the NFL between his preseason work and the 4 games he started. But the difference is Milton had 1 game of work in the regular season in which he played pretty solid football, enough that teams think there's potential to develop. In this case, a little less football was more.

I certainly support the Milton trade, I just find it amusing we could be so down on sending a day 3 pick for Lance, but so high on the Milton move which was essentially based on a single game. Different moves and players yes, but both were day 3 picks for QBs that were 1 and 2 years into their NFL careers.
