Report (Speculation): Wade needs to reach Super Bowl; Jerry likes Les Miles

I said just yesterday that I felt there are only a few guys in college that translate to the Pros and Les Miles is one of them.

Why would a successful college coach who is making a ton of money at the college level want the stress of coaching in the NFL. The college gig is the sweetest deal their is. You have all the freedom and power and none of the nfl stress to perform.

I agree. However some do want to move up to the next level because of the challenge. Like you I think good college coaches have it made.

A challenge.

Very successful people are always finding ways to motivate themselves and take on new challenges.

I think Garrett is the leading candidate to replace Wade.I don't see Jerry going with an outsider unless he determines that a total overhaul is in order.

I agree and some like Nick Saban made the quick return back to the college level. It looks like Wannstead likes it a bit better as well as Butch Davis.

what? Everyone critcizes garrett.

Its a daily ritual.

Why is there this perception that he does not get it as much as wade?

I dont see a bunch of first round draft picks running around on garrett's side of the ball.

I meant that from Babe asking about Garrett getting some heat lately and Jerry saying "What if we win here tonight and finish strong, then Jason is looking a lot better." What if we're winning games 13-10? Jerry didn't even seem to consider the possibility.

I do agree with you that JG has been the plan all along, though.

But I have to ask, if Garrett had been named HC in '07, and we'd gone 13-3, 9-7, and now 9-5, would people constantly be calling for his head? Nope. They'd probably be saying what a great job he'd done and what a great hire he was. That's the only part that bugs me.

Uh oh my 2 favorite posters getting into a debate.

True.

The only way I would want a Head Coach is if:
1. The team is young and not winning
2. We have a strong Organizational Structure with a GM

Like someone said earlier, Tony Romo isn't getting any younger and I don't want his "golden" years wasted on some NFL rookie trying to learn on the job.

lol, seeing that we are adults we can do that.

no need for the popcorn.

Sometimes people can debate what is the more important part of green...yellow or blue...without it being personal or having some negative conotation to it.

If CL called me every name in the book I would still consider him a friend..!

I don't think a college coach is the answer unless you have a team that is in a similar situation that Dallas was in after the Landry years.Bringing in a college coach in that sitaution can help a team rebuild very quickly because they know where all the college talent is at.Just look at the success that Dallas had when Jimmy first came into the leauge with his drafting abilities.

I think that a team with average to above average talent in place cannot afford to bring in a college coach. There is too much risk involved with bringing in a college coach.Petrino was a failure in Atlanta,Saban was quick to leave Miami and Spurrier was a flop in Washington. It's hard to justify bringing in a college coach just to watch him burn out after a few seasons. Those few seasons that were lost just shortened your window of oppurtunity to compete with the talent that you had in place.

So JG gets to be coach. Does his dad become DC and wade is gone or does he clean house and hire his own coaches.
What is a likely scenario?

Jerry hires the rest of the staff as usual.:laugh2:

I think he's the leading "candidate",being a candidate doesn't mean he's been given the job.

If it's Garrett I don't think there will be that much turnover with the staff, but you never know.

Of course! Why Didn't I already remember that.
Plus it would be the same as it was with P-kickers, you get unemployed or unhappy where they are.

If you follow college ball you know that Les Miles is a joke. He took over a program rich in talent and although he's recruited well, the program has slipped badly the past couple of years.

LSU fans would love for him to be gone because his buy-out is too expensive for them to fire him. After the disasterous last few seconds at Ole Miss they want his head on a platter.

Jerry's point is that if we win, Garrett gets less criticism. That winning gets you good press, losing doesn't; doesn't matter if the criticism is warranted/unwarranted.

____

Jerry didn't SAY that possibility. Just like he didn't say what if Garrett dies in a car crash tomorrow, or what if Garrett leaves for another head coaching job elsewhere, or what if Wade wins the Super Bowl this year, or what if Garrett retires....

Yeah, in an interview, Jerry didn't go thru EVERY possibility. Shocker.

There are a couple of College coaches I would not mind hiring, but if Jerry hires Stoops I will picket in front of his house. Miles is not any better.

If Wade gets to the playoffs and wins a playoff game, he'll probably get a raise, but he'll definitely be here next year. Dallas has had success with college coaches. Johnson and Switzer back to back for a couple. But generally college coaches don't do well in the NFL.

Dear misguided OU fan:

DALLAS DID NOT HAVE SUCCESS WITH BARRY SWITZER, THEY TEMPORARILY HAD SUCCESS IN SPITE OF BARRY, THEN SAW THEIR DYNASTY TUMBLE BECAUSE OF HIM.

this is pretty far out there, but id like to see wade take a pay cut to Defensive coor. Garrett stays where he is, an JJ busts out the checkbook for shanahan, or cowhler
