A few factoids about the Dolphins...
I'm a big believer in point differential, as it's been proven to be a usefull tool. In games last year decided by 3 points or less, they were 0-6 . Meaning the point difference between a 1-15 and 7-9 team was 18 points. That's not a lot of points to make up.
They had the dead last ranked run defense in the NFL in 2007 ... by a considerable margin. Giving up an astonishing 152 yards per game on the ground.
They had oneof the worst special teams units in the NFL.
Guess which two areas Parcells believes are a good short cut to turn around a bad franchise? Completely retooling an offense takes time and several years. Retooling a special teams unit or run defense? That can be done in an offseason, and might get you 3-4 more wins than the previous year.
Can they retool their special teams from dead last in the league to better than average in 1 year? That might be doable. They brought in our best special teams ace from the last 5 years, and they brought in several other team's special teams stars from other teams (Boomer Grisby, Reggie Torbor, ). The kind of signings that really don't draw headlines and attention by the media, but good value signings when you grasp the purpose behind them.
Can they upgrade their run defense from worst in teh NFL to something better than average? Parcells improved our run offense from #15 to #3 in his first year here. The Dolphins have brought in Fergie to man the nosetackle position. They brought in a 6'3" 315 lbs. Randy Starks to help in the run game. Then they drafted two defensive ends in the first three rounds. They immediately upgraded the run defense of their middle linebackers with Ayodele (who played well in Parcells 3-4) and Torbor. They might not can out athlete you, but they're not going to be bullied and pushed around like they were last year under Dom Capers.
So while I don't think you're looking at 10-6, just shoring those two areas up from league worst to something resembling league average or better might be enough to swing those 3 point losses to 3 point wins. I can easily see the Dolphins putting up a 7-9 season on a poor schedule winning ugly games 17-14 ... just like he did with the Cowboys in 2003. I would be astonished if they had another year like last year.
As far as Terry Glenn being a "progress" stopper ... they need progress for their young QB's, first and foremost, and one of the ways you get that is to give them a WR who can get seperation and catch the ball. I don't think they have a lot of those guys over there.
