Well, he did make his own bed.. he didn't have to exile Taylor & Thomas. So he must be prepared to accept another miserable season. I would have preferred to keep them for leadership and to actually give the defense a competitive chance, which only helps to sell seats.

You think parcells being there doesnt sell seats?

Pay close attention to parcells career. He will turn them around. Do they have another taylor on the roster, no. Will they be better this year anyway, yes.

you dont want disgruntled veterans on your team, especially when he has proven not be a leader by skipping every single team activity in the offseason. leaders do not do that. Dont confuse great player with leader.

I don't think Parcells sells more seats than Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas. But Parcells helped propagate the disenfranchised feeling for Taylor by airing his opinions to the media instead of behind closed doors.

Winning (or at least competitive) teams sell seats and advertising... rebuilding teams do not. You could hire Belichick as the head coach and if he goes 0-16, he won't do your bottom line any favors.

If the fans see hope in their franchise turning around then yes he can help get people in the seats and excited about Miami Football.

You know, the thing I like least about today's NFL is the team-to-team player movement. I can sympathize with Dolphins fans who'd prefer that Taylor and Thomas never left.

But that's the way things are. When you start over, you start over.

It happened when Jimmy Johnson took over and got rid of several established Landry players.

It happened when Parcells took over and Emmitt went west.

And so it happened in Miami.

True and in Taylor he got a 2nd rd pick for a player who has said he only plans on playing this season and then hanging them up to pursue is acting career. I would say that 2nd rd pick has more overall value to Miami than a player who is only going to play 1 more year.

True.

Speaking of memory lane, it was nice that we kept Bill Bates on all those years after Johnson took over. He was always one of my favorites when I was a kid back in the Landry years.

We kept him because he was good for the team... especially in the locker room.

Either way, Parcells has a pretty tough road ahead of him, and I don't envy him for anything.

Well I hope he does... I'm a Parcells fan mind you.

But he'll have to do better than 1 or 2 wins this season to fill those seats, or they won't be coming back until the rebuilding is over.

He was also a very good special teams player which was the main reason he was able to stay in the league as long as he did. I don't think Jimmy was doing any favors, if you made the team it was because you earned the spot.

No doubt but what he brings to many fans is hope and right now hope has to be big for Miami fans who have seen their team hit rock bottom. Hell if they go out and show improvement and can post 5 or 6 wins that would give them some hope for the future. This is not going to be a 1 or even 2 year turn around for Miami it is going to take some time but if fans think their team is heading in the right direction they will go to the games.

Heck yeah, if they can go out and get 5 or 6 wins, I think more than just their own fans would be impressed with that... the whole league would be in shock. Mind you, I think that's a real strong reason as to why Parcells accepted the Miami position because he knew that no matter what he does, he can only make the team get better.

Last year they celebrated their lone victory like they had won the Superbowl... I'd love to be there for the drunken celebration that will ensue if they were to get two victories this season! :D

A few factoids about the Dolphins...

I'm a big believer in point differential, as it's been proven to be a usefull tool. In games last year decided by 3 points or less, they were 0-6 . Meaning the point difference between a 1-15 and 7-9 team was 18 points. That's not a lot of points to make up.

They had the dead last ranked run defense in the NFL in 2007 ... by a considerable margin. Giving up an astonishing 152 yards per game on the ground.

They had oneof the worst special teams units in the NFL.

Guess which two areas Parcells believes are a good short cut to turn around a bad franchise? Completely retooling an offense takes time and several years. Retooling a special teams unit or run defense? That can be done in an offseason, and might get you 3-4 more wins than the previous year.

Can they retool their special teams from dead last in the league to better than average in 1 year? That might be doable. They brought in our best special teams ace from the last 5 years, and they brought in several other team's special teams stars from other teams (Boomer Grisby, Reggie Torbor, ). The kind of signings that really don't draw headlines and attention by the media, but good value signings when you grasp the purpose behind them.

Can they upgrade their run defense from worst in teh NFL to something better than average? Parcells improved our run offense from #15 to #3 in his first year here. The Dolphins have brought in Fergie to man the nosetackle position. They brought in a 6'3" 315 lbs. Randy Starks to help in the run game. Then they drafted two defensive ends in the first three rounds. They immediately upgraded the run defense of their middle linebackers with Ayodele (who played well in Parcells 3-4) and Torbor. They might not can out athlete you, but they're not going to be bullied and pushed around like they were last year under Dom Capers.

So while I don't think you're looking at 10-6, just shoring those two areas up from league worst to something resembling league average or better might be enough to swing those 3 point losses to 3 point wins. I can easily see the Dolphins putting up a 7-9 season on a poor schedule winning ugly games 17-14 ... just like he did with the Cowboys in 2003. I would be astonished if they had another year like last year.

As far as Terry Glenn being a "progress" stopper ... they need progress for their young QB's, first and foremost, and one of the ways you get that is to give them a WR who can get seperation and catch the ball. I don't think they have a lot of those guys over there.

I still think he will have a good season. So put in the category that TG will have a solid season. The 'Fins seem like a perfect fit other than Parcells and Sparano he could help Ginn at Wr Ohio St. guy.

Everyone and their mother has been calling Ted Ginn a bust, but I believe he was one of three players (that I saw) in college two years ago that truly looked like men among boys athletically. The other two were Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson.

I think Ted Ginn is going to make some serious noise in the near future.

I hope the best for Glenn but he has not been signed as of yet and I would think would still need to pass a physical.

Jen Engel, who still talks to several people in Miami (and maybe Parcells himself), just said that Miami was ready to sign him but now they're leaning to not doing it. They thought Jerry was just playing hardball, but now they think the knee is a lot worse than they expected.

Jeff Darlington was on earlier today and he said the no deal was imminent despite what's being reported in the dallas papers. He said the dolphins are still concerned about the knee, but he thinks a deal may still get done.
