The cries of "racism" are very legit
Several reasons
1) The Vick/Newton comparisons. Completely lazy considering the type of player Griffin is compared to those 2.
2) The laughable obsession with style. You know who else was obsessed with style? Michael Jordan. Probably one of the most stylish athletes of the 20th century.
3) "The type of QB" RG3 is. A pocket passer that has the ability to run? A potential Steve Young clone in the same offense Steve Young won a Superbowl in?
Racism? It is clearly there
As for his actual bust potential? Lets explore ways people actually evaluate a QB
1) The skillset. Does he have the ability to make the required NFL throws? Yes it is clear RG3 does. Kellen Moore was a better college QB over a longer period of time, but he does not have the ability to make NFL throws
2) Physical build? 6-2 3/8, 223 lbs. In the same size class as Romo and Rodgers. Another check mark
3) Ability to process information? This is the hardest thing to evaluate and can never truly be evaluated until the player is in the huddle with NFL guys
This video makes me feel good. Very small sample size, of course
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/09000d5d82742179/RGIII-shows-his-smarts
4) Character/leadership/intangibles. Its rare to find someone who checks this box off as well as RG3. This isn't even a question
That is pre draft evaluation. Now, what makes a QB successful
1) Stable environment. Mike Shanahan will coach out his contract at minimum. Dan Snyder is not one who likes to, nor has the ability anymore to fire coaches with big contracts remaining. Zorn had one year, 3 million left. Norv's contract was up. With Marty landing in San Diego so quick Snyder was off the hook. Spurrier quit and Gibbs retired. So RG3 will have a stable organizational environment
2) Stable offense. See above. RG3 will be in the same system for at least 3 years, a system with boots and a deep to shallow passing game, both which accentuate his strong points (excellent deep ball accuracy, obvious athleticism)
3) Cast around him. Improved but still not great. As of this moment a B WR cast, until proven otherwise. A franchise left tackle. A running game to lean on, and a solid defense on the other side
4) The toughest one which you can never evaluate till the player shows up. Ability to learn an offense and process information. This we will find out soon enough
Can he bust? Of course he can, any player can bust. Do I think he will? No
