I still want to move him over to DE and let him try to become a combination of Too Tall and Charles Haley.

Yeah, as long as he learns how to catch, run routes, and block. Minor things for a tight end.

jmo, but as a basketball player, she *should* have good enough hand eye coordination to be pretty consistent catching the ball. The art of route running, creating separation as well as blocking is no guarantee.

He's a little bigger than Gronk.

If he can play similar to Gronk at all - just running through the secondary with reckless abandon, I'll take it.

He's an athlete, that's for sure.

There's a learning curve, for sure. But I'd keep him around. If he can learn routes and work on blocking he could be unstoppable.

Man I wanna get excited but I'll wait to see him in preseason

I just can't get excited over this pick - not yet. Our track record with experimental picks hasn't been good. (See Isaiah Stanback, see Drew Henson (trade), see Chad Hutchinson (free agent))

Preston Pearson never played a down of college football, he was able to transition from basketball to the NFL

He's certainly got the tools. Let's see if he can use them properly.

This guy Gathers doesn't have the coordination to play NFL football.
All that weight & height comes at a cost. These Sports Science pieces are laughable.
Sorry but, it's a disgrace to mention this guy's name in the same sentence as. A. Gates.

I am sorry but a guy that can play high level basketball has the coordination to play football.

I agree, I think transitioning from basketball to football is not that hard. Now how he handles the physical side of the game is a bit different. Should be interesting to see him on the field.

Great athlete who knows virtually nothing about the game of football. It's gonna take some serious work on his part to become a player. If he puts in the work he could develope into a player but he is a long ways away from being a football player

Exactly.

Gathers has no experience playing football at either the college or high school levels. He was eligible to be selected in the 2016 NFL Draft after playing four seasons of basketball at Baylor. As a power forward, Gathers averaged 11.4 points a game in the 2015-2016 season. Rico's father, Richard Sr, is the cousin of the late Hank Gathers, the Loyola Marymount All-American basketball player.

From the very little I've seen of him running routes he looks lightyears away from running an NFL route, as in I question his ability to physically do it

We all love this pick because it was only a 7th rd pick. There's a lot of potential for the money. If it fails, it didn't cost that much.
I wouldn't mind seeing the Cowboys take a risk on freak athletes late in the draft.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

LOVE this pick.

Physically it shouldn't be a problem at all. Learning technique and the basics of the game is where he will need time, teaching and the will to put in the work. The physical part is not going to be a problem, the mental part could be

That sports science is a nice video and their rankings are cute but until you see him get hit it all means very little.

That and the TE position requires football smarts. You have to be able to read the defense at a split second and know where to go. And we haven't even gotten into blocking.

Jerry's chance at redemption for wasting a decade of 2nd round picks on tight ends... LOL...

Not sure a 6th round NBA convert redeems him, if anything, it is an indictment. But still a funny observation...

They should easily be able to integrate him into the red zone short yardage offense.

I wonder if he doesn't work out at TE if they would try a position switch along the lines of Parnell...OT anyone?

This guy, if anything, is a pass catching TE. Blocking is going to take some seasons to learn.
