I am sorry but a guy that can play high level basketball has the coordination to play football.

Not true. He's 6'8", 275 lbs... that's why he played 'high level' basketball. The overwhelming majority of his b-ball play/highlights was dunking. Not very difficult when you're 6'8, 275 lbs. He's probably more coordinated than the 'average 6'8-er, but not enough to be a significant NFL TE. Definitely not Antonio Gates.

I think Rico is a practice squad candidate, but I don't think "coordination" is his problem. His problem is technique, he's a fine athlete.

Also, I don't know why people keep quoting his height at 6'8", the dude is 6'6". Maybe on the Baylor basketball program he's listed at 6'8", but they always lie in basketball programs.

count mentioned it... he's not 6-8. When he played next to Cory Jefferson, he looked significantly shorter.. and Cory is 6'9"...
it was pretty much known he was an undersized 4.

The video for which this thread was created begins with a graphic saying hes 6'8"... whether it's true or not, that's why. 6'6", 6'8", whatever.. he's *** tall.

He was one of the best rebounders in the nation... and he was a better player than Tony Gonzales, Julius Peppers, & Jimmy Graham...

Are you seriously comparing this guy to arguably the 2 best TEs in NFL history (as well as one of the best OLB/DEs)?
So now we have Gonzalez, Graham along with Gates... ALL of their last names start with a 'G' just like Gathers! Apparently we should have drafted this future superstar with the #4.

Did you read the quote I responded to?

I was comparing them as basketball players....

Every thing else you mentioned has nothing to do with how I feel or what I posted.. its what you read into it...

I'm not saying the guy has proven anything on the NFL field yet... None of us know, we hope for the best. (well some don't, they hope to be right)...
but he was a really good basketball player and a very good athlete... elite level rebounder, with good family genes... If that translates.. thats a win for us..

no he wasn't a fluid offensive player, but he played with aggression, smarts, and had a knack for the ball... Ill give a guy like that a try all day ,every day.

anyway... a January article on him possibly playing in the NFL:

"Baylor's Rico Gathers is College Basketball's Best Rebounder"
http://www.campusrush.com/baylor-bears-basketball-rico-gathers-rebounds-1566789996.html

and a video to boot...

I like him but he catches the way someone catches when they're tossing around a football around in the backyard. There's an intensity in football that I don't think other sports have. There's going to be a culture shock I think.

Maybe I'm being unfair, but there's a reason he chose basketball over football back in middle school. That would seem to indicate how he's wired. When some little DB lays him out, is he going to start thinking basketball in Turkey doesn't sound so bad after all?

I wonder if he went to Witten's football camp. :p

I get it, and I wouldn't even have said anything, but you were making it sounds like anybody that's his height and size should be easily able to dunk a basketball.

I assure you, it's not as easy as it looks. Especially when people are trying to stop you from doing just that.

Anyone his height/size SHOULD be easily able to dunk a basketball. It IS as easy as it looks, when you're 6'6"+.

They should easily be able to integrate him into the red zone short yardage offense.

I wonder if he doesn't work out at TE if they would try a position switch along the lines of Parnell...OT anyone?

Right OT

There's a learning curve, for sure. But I'd keep him around. If he can learn routes and work on blocking he could be unstoppable.

as far as blocking his foot work shouldn't be that bad considering the b-ball drills you run.

I'm guessing you're speaking from deep personal experience being 6'6" and easily dunking on people trying to stop you?

I'll wait until he gets lit up by a linebacker or strong safety. Then we'll know.
