Years prior? Are you counting middle school?

Fant was the swing OT in game 1.

That means that Rico would have an extra 17 week season before being active as compared to Fant.

Is a season of being a backup TE in college (conference USA) and playing in 2 games really a better training background than a full 17 week season practicing with and NFL team?

The differences between Fant and Rico seem very minimal.

I'm not really pushing for Rico to play in the play-offs because I prefer to minimize changes at this point, but if Fant can do what he has done it's definitely possible that Rico could be a 2nd or 3rd TE, especially considering that he has a big size advantage as a blocker compared to other TEs (6-6, 290); whereas, Fant was at a size disadvantage when drafted(296 pounds).

The biggest issue is that being a starting LT is a way bigger challenge than being a backup 3rd sting TE.

I don't know how else to put it: Rico Gathers never played organized football until the first day he dressed for a Dallas Cowboys practice.
Fant played organized football. He played college football. Minimal may be, but it was considerably more than Gathers. And yes, having that year in college is a better training background, because Fant also has the 17 weeks practicing (and playing) with an NFL team.

I am not downplaying Fant's achievements. Compared to 99.8% of the league, what he has done is remarkable. And Gathers may never see a regular season professional game. But if he plays, if he starts and contributes, his NFL journey is far beyond's Fant's. He would be that .2%.

Rico is being paid only $10 less than the league minimum which is Jerry's way of keeping him from leaving.
that and the fact the Cowboys have given him a chance, should keep him here awhile longer

Everything I've heard about him recently has been good, especially hearing that Tony liked throwing to him in practice, and he catches everything. Rico must be Broaddus' pet cat because he often gives updates on him, and it's been overwhelmingly positive thus far. And this is after laughing at how poorly Rico was blocking early on. I remember Nate cracking up at him setting a bball pick in an attempt to block.

I'm trusting pretty much everyone in this draft class to be exceptional.

Gathers played football in 8th grade or something, definitely not in HS

So Tony has good timing with Rico, but Dak probably doesn't. Another reason why it's probably unwise to activate him for the playoffs.

I've read he never played football other than flag. It was a story last spring describing how he needed help putting his pads on. I don't remember the specifics, and can't find it on Google.

Fant didn't have the 17 weeks at the time they made him the swing Tackle.

he did not play in high school or college
 
No one but those at practices know when he's ready or how he can contribute. Certainly, it seems unlikely, suppose he's been unstoppable for our own defense in the red zone for the past month. And supposed his blocking is better than Escobar's....then who knows that he couldn't change a game in only 10-15 snaps?

Again...unlikely, but we aren't there.

Eight years away from a sport that was not his first love also lower level pads at secondary publicschools are less complicated than newer pro level or college level
