Outside of the one year he got to the Super Bowl, Rivera has been a Jason Garrett tier coach

The problem is that he's a defensive guy on a team that didn't have an offense. Of course, Garrett had similar problems the opposite way, but he wasn't near as good of an offensive guy as Rivera is on defense. I think he might have done better here because we essentially had our offense in place, but I'm liking the combo of McCarthy-Quinn, so I'm glad we went with the offensive guy, even though I thought we were more in need of a defensive head coach. It's funny, though, that our offense may have slipped a peg in the process while we've become more of a defensive-led team.

It would hilariously poetic for Rivera to be replaced by Del Rio midseason.

They made severe blunders in the draft trying to get a franchise QB, Haskins, Griffin, Cousins, come to mind. And this off season they failed to get a top notch QB by FA or trade. Settled for Wince....even Heinicke is better than him. Rivera is on a short leash and would not be shocked if he gets canned like a tuna after the season. No way DQ would consider them as a option. Much better out there in the near future.
Griffin was very good, until his injury. Cousins was also very good, they screwed up by not paying him.

I still laugh that they called all 31 teams and ended up with Wentz as the best option.
they ahd that deal with JG, it fell through because JG said oh wait forget i needed shoulder surgery, Imagine the 9ers now without JG after lance went down .. JG is but better then wentz so he would help the deadskins a bit more but they have other issues.,

it is odd they didn't draft a qb high the last 2 years.. same issues with Colts and well 10-14 other teams. qbs are hard to find its why Dak and Rush both being solid is a blessing.

Remember the good ole days when this board was melting down when Washington hired Rivera and we got "stuck" with MM? Jury is still out on MM for sure, but I would take him over Rivera at this point.

Good times.

I was OK going with either because they both had gotten to Super Bowls, which is far more than we could say about the Garrett mediocrity. I do think Rivera may have fared better here than he has in Washington because we had a mostly intact offense. Of course, I don't know how much McCarthy has affected who we've drafted and brought in. Rivera might have pushed for more defense and allowed the offense to weaken. He did pretty good in Carolina, though, when he had an offense in place.

The Commanders had their choice of Herbert or Tua in the 2020 draft and went with Young. Rivera's first year there.
Sure, Young was seen as a great edge prospect but they also haven't had a good QB there in decades.

Going with Smith for 2020 was probably the best move but he was also in his 30's and a good bus driver.

There's really nothing better about Washington since he's gotten there.

They tried at QB. They went after Stafford hard an offseason ago but failed. They went after Russell Wilson hard before Denver got him. They went after Jimmy G but surgery derailed that. So Wentz was the consolation prize of sorts. They need that defense to carry the team. That and the run game. They invested a lot of draft capital on that DL and it should be paying off. Rivera has failed in getting the OL talent needed and sticking with Del Rio. Two biggest mistakes IMO.

I don't know how much say Rivera has over quarterbacks or personnel in general. Given the dysfunction in Washington, my guess is not much. So I won't pin the Wentz hire on him even though that move will cost him his job.

In general though, Rivera's not a great coach. He's a disciplinarian, which some bad teams need, but he brings nothing new to the table schematically. The downside of being so strict is that Rivera is inflexible.

He's dependent on assistants, and his current assistants aren't that good. Scott Turner's only achievement is being Norv Turner's son. Jack Del Rio is another old defensive guy whose heydey is a decade past.

I would say that after 3 years of Rivera, we have seen the high water mark with a fluky playoff run, and it's time for a change. But Washington's like us, in that nothing will change until the ownership does.

He's not a bad defensive mind.
I'd keep him on the phone call list if Quinn leaves.

Worse in the NFL.
Jerry is aggravating, but Snyder has taken that Org to a whole different level.
Lower Level that is.
Jerry is just better at cleaning up his messes. And Jerry knows how to play the game. Snyder is a beyond arrogant little guy with a complex. So he’s made so many enemies that it’s all coming back , with a vengeance.
